UK Land Tax Redemption records

Ancestry (www.ancestry.co.uk) has released a new collection entitled UK, Land Tax Redemption, 1798. From the site:

What’s in the Records

"Two Acts led to the creation of these tax lists. The first, 38 Geo. III, c. 5, set a land tax for the year 1798. Act 38 Geo. III, c. 60, made that tax perpetual. These registers list both owners and occupiers of land that was subject to the tax. While they provide no details on the properties, they do record the amount assessed and sometimes a redemption date.

"Because this was a national tax, these records provide almost a mini census. If your ancestor was a landowner or renter, they will very likely be listed in these records. Some records may contain information through 1811, particularly records for Buckingham County."

Just to add, by "UK", Ancestry means England and Wales. The collection is accessible at http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=2319.

  3. It looks like these records come from TNA. Why don't they give the TNA reference numbers, so we can find out exactly what we're looking at?

  4. The reference number is given Rosemary - the following is the info on the search page -

Land Tax Redemption Office: Quotas and Assessments. IR23. Records of the Boards of Stamps, Taxes, Excise, Stamps and Taxes, and Inland Revenue. The National Archives, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, England.

  5. Oops sorry, I missed the small IR23 in the rest of all the text! Thanks.

  6. This was a so-and-so to find - it doesn't appear to be in the Card Catalog yet, I had to go to

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/reccol/default (which is "Recently added or updated collections") to find a link.

  7. Yeah, OK Chris - NOW I can see your link, which I think must have been added later, given it's not on the RSS feed? (Or that's my excuse anyway...)

  8. Yes, it was added later. Will try to do better next time. In the meantime, links to all new records releases by Ancestry can be found on the home page by clicking on "View All new Records".

    Hope that helps.

  9. Thanks for that Chris - I'd not realised that link went where it does (it ends up on the URL I gave). Foolishly I assumed that because it was at the foot of a list of "Featured Records", all branded as new, then it would be more of the same, only not so new, i.e. the very newest would be visible without going to the linked page. Instead it's a completely different list of new stuff. D'uh.

Incidentally - another aspect of this is that to search for anything in this collection, you need to go to its own page - "Search all records" simply won't find anything in this new collection. Well, not on the samples I tried. I suspect it's something to do with the fact it's not in the Card Catalog.
