Forthcoming PRONI events

A fair few things happening in PRONI (www.proni.gov.uk) in Belfast over the next couple of months!

Dickens: Irish Friends and Family Ties Exhibition

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland invites you to join us in celebrating the 200th birthday of one of the greatest novelists in the English language, Charles Dickens

Between 22nd October-9th November PRONI will be displaying an exhibition entitled 'Dickens- Irish Friends and Family Ties', featuring never-before-seen archives from PRONI’s extensive collection as well as material from the Charles Dickens Museum and elsewhere.

Dickens: Irish Friends and Family Ties explores the unique and lasting friendship between the great author and three prominent Ulstermen: politician James Emerson Tennent, newspaper editor Francis Dalzell Finlay and the diplomat Lord Dufferin, and demonstrates how these relationships extended to some of Dickens’ children. The exhibition also touches upon the weird and the wonderful of Dickensian society, from execution and bodysnatching to tokens of love and friendship, allowing the visitor to consider how they may have influenced Dickens’ writing.

The exhibition is being held as part of the 50th year of the Belfast Festival at Queens and also with the Dickens 2012 NI Festival programme, a year long festival of events to celebrate the 200th birthday of the author.
