Talks at PRONI this week

Two talks this week at PRONI in Belfast (www.proni.gov.uk):

'The Other Irish: The Scots-Irish Rascals who Made America'
By Karen McCarthy

Wednesday 6th February 1-2pm

What do Davy Crockett, Mark Twain, and Neil Armstrong have in common? They are descendants of feisty Scots-Irish immigrants who travelled the ocean to the new world in the early 1700s.

Rebellious, independent, and fervently religious . . . thousands of immigrants with grand dreams sailed from Ireland's northern harbours to the new world at the end of the 1700s and tamed the American South. In 'The Other Irish: The Scots-Irish Rascals who Made America', Karen McCarthy looks at the impact they have made since they arrived, including settling the wild frontier, running moonshine into auto racing history, and launching a new world order. On Wednesday 6th February she will appear at PRONI to give a reading and introductory talk on her book, The Other Irish: The Scots-Irish Rascals who Made America'.

Originally from Ireland, Karen McCarthy is an accomplished author, journalist and documentary maker, now based in both Dublin and New York. She has written about U.S. politics in the Irish Examiner and was an embedded reporter in Iraq, travelling to Baghdad and the surrounding provinces and contributing news features and analysis about the war to the Irish Times, Sunday Tribune, and News Tribune .

Her four-part documentary series Made in America about the “new Irish”—the ’90s generation of 30-something Irish immigrants turned millionaires—was broadcast on Ireland’s leading network RTE and was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Documentary Series. She worked at Al Jazeera English in Washington, D.C., where she wrote and produced a daily international news and talkback segment for the Riz Khan show.
