1831 census for Melrose and Lindean

The 1841 census is the first that is used widely for genealogical research. The decennial census was in fact first commenced in 1801, though in most cases the information collated was mainly statistical in nature - but not all was. In some cases you do in fact get useful genealogical information.

Maxwell Ancestry has now released a CD (also available by email in PDF format) with details from the 1831 census for Melrose and Lindean in the former Scottish Borders county of Roxburghshire. The information provided is generally only the names of the heads of households, followed by columns of statistics, as follows:
  • Inhabited Houses
  • Families
  • House buildings
  • Uninhabited Houses
  • Families: Agriculture, Trade, Other Families
  • Males; Females (Total of both)
  • Males above 20: Total, Agriculture 1st Class, Agriculture 2nd Class, Agriculture 3rd Class, Manufacturing, Trade, Professional, Labourers, Others, Servants
  • Males Servants Under 20
  • Female Servants
  • Children Under 10

A list of the surnames included for Melrose is available at http://maxwellancestry.co.uk/ancestry/publishing/names/31799.htm with a list of other products for Roxburghshire available at http://maxwellancestry.co.uk/ancestry/publishing/pubroxburghshire.htm.
