Lancashire FHHS 40th anniversary fair

From Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society:

“40 years of Family History”

On 14 September 2013 the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society will be celebrating its 40 years of helping Family Historians through the trials and joys of Family History research. It all started with a few hardy pioneers as the Rossendale Society for Genealogy & Heraldry, what was later to become the Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society. They met in a bid to help each other in what was then a difficult area of research, all paper based and very restricted access to official information. Now, of course, much is available online and through the many UK archives & libraries. The Society is now made up of nationally regarded experts and members keen to learn about their ancestry and to help others in their research.

Although the Society researched into Lancashire’s heraldic past from the beginning, the Heraldry Group of the Society was inaugurated in 1982. Its members include the present Garter Principal King of Arms, Thomas Woodcock of The College of Arms.

Celebrations are being held throughout the 14 LFHHS branches and culminate with a Family History Fair jointly held with the North West Group of Family History Societies and a Celebration Lunch in Rossendale. The Fair is a major Regional event, with over 100 stands, being held in King Georges Hall, Blackburn on 14 September, from 10am until 4pm. For those about to start researching their family history, the Fair is an ideal opportunity to start by meeting knowledgeable members of the societies represented and providers of research materials.

For those wishing to know more or to contact the Society, the web site www.lfhhs.org.uk provides details of the Society, its publications and its aims.

My wife Claire is planning to swim from the Scottish island of Cumbrae to the town of Largs on September 14th to raise money for local charity Gillian's Saltire Appeal, providing respite for families affected by cancer (Claire's mum and sister in Ireland have previously come through cancer, whilst my mum, based in England, currently has bladder cancer). Her Just Giving sponsorship page, with further details, is at http://www.justgiving.com/Claire-Paton1. If you can help to sponsor her, even by a wee amount, we'd be very grateful - many thanks!
