Events at PRONI next week

Next week events at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (www.proni.gov.uk) in Belfast:

TALK: Belfast post-1945: a society in transition
Part of the Belfast: Past Present Future Lecture Series

Tuesday 20th May, 1pm to 2pm

Following on from infrastructure and architecture, we next turn to the human story of Belfast. Dr. Peter Smyth, author of the successful, Changing Times: Life in 1950s Northern Ireland, will be in PRONI to examine what life was like for urbanites in the wake of the Second World War. Peter aims to illustrate how this was a “society in transition”, where new phenomena such as mechanised transport, holidays, TV, electricity and health care were all having tangible impacts on people’s lives.

CONFERENCE: Sunningdale, the Ulster Workers Council Strike and their Legacies: The Struggle for Democracy in Northern Ireland

Friday 23rd May, 9am to 4pm

Then on Friday, you are all very welcome to join us for a very special conference that will seek to examine the legacy of the 1974 Sunningdale Agreement. Eminent commentators and historians, from Professor Arthur Aughey to Dr. Brendan Lynn; Dr. Malachi O’Doherty to Alex Kane; will be in PRONI to make sense of what happened in 1974, and whether this has any bearing on our current political infrastructure. More details can be found here. For those of you in the Twitter-sphere, a special hash-tag has been created for you to tap into the build-up to this event: #UWC40.

Admission to each event is FREE. Please contact PRONI to reserve your place.
