Mass burial of 20th century orphans at Galway workhouse uncovered

Irish Central is carrying a shocking story about the mass burial of some 800 orphans in a septic tank at a former workhouse called The Home in Tuam, Galway, between 1925 and 1960, when it was run as a Mother and Baby home for “fallen women” by the Bon Secours Sisters.

"Children died at The Home at the rate of one a fortnight for almost 40 years, one report claims. Another appears to claim that 300 children died between 1943 and 1946, which would mean two deaths a week in the isolated institution."

The full shocking story is at http://www.irishcentral.com/opinion/cahirodoherty/Galway-historian-reveals-truth-behind-800-orphans-in-mass-grave.html.

Funds are currently being raised to erect a memorial to the mothers and babies of The Home.

The Irish Independent also has the story at http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/church-to-meet-over-memorial-for-800-babies-at-mass-grave-30321303.html.
