Tour of the Internet Archive

I'm still on my holidays in the English Lake District, but I have a few hours to kill in the 17th century cottage I'm staying in, so some stories to update on!

The first is this - a great video looking at the workings of, and ethos behind, the Internet Archive (www.archive.org), which has now passed ten petabytes of data storage. The online archive is best known to us in Scotland as the partner of the National Library of Scotland, which has a dedicated platform on the site at https://archive.org/details/nationallibraryofscotland, which includes over a thousand digitised Scottish post office directories from the 1770s to the 1940s, army lists, compiled and published genealogies, and more. The site also hosts the Wayback Machine, which allows you to resurrect dead websites, or earlier cached former versions of sites still in existence. Here's the video (takes a few seconds to get going) - enjoy!

Now available for UK research is the new second edition of the best selling Tracing Your Family History on the Internet: A Guide for Family Historians, whilst my new book British and Irish Newspapers is also now out. And please consider purchasing the great new version of Caledonia by The Libations at 79p via www.caledonia2014.com - all profits go to help fund Scottish foodbanks
