Ancestry updates Gloucestershire and London collections

Ancestry (www.ancestry.co.uk) has in the last week updated several UK based collections, but the main site only listed that they had been updated, without saying how they had been. I have contacted the organisation for some clarity on what has changed - a huge thanks to Bryony Partridge for providing the following breakdown of the changes:

Gloucestershire Parish Registers – updates

We added more than 300,000 new images (including more than two million records) from bishop’s transcripts to the Gloucestershire parish register collections. Starting in 1598, ministers were required to make copies of their parish registers on parchment. These copies are known as bishop’s transcripts and can help fill in the gaps when the original parish registers are no longer available.

London Electoral Rolls – updates

The records have been processed to increase visibility for an additional 19 million records.
Electoral registers are lists of individuals who are eligible to vote. Registers typically provide a name and place of abode, and older registers may include a description of property and qualifications to vote.

  1. I asked Ancestry about the Gloucestershire updates, wanting to know what they have added. Their reply: "Unfortunately at this time we do not have a facility to check specifically which records in an updated collection are new, however please do be advised that these new records will now be indexed for hints, so there is a strong chance that those that are relevant to people in your tree will be suggested at the next site index."

Really helpful, particularly as I don't use their tree facility
