New Burke's Peerage service

Burke's Peerage is now back online at www.burkespeerage.com in a new format. There are free to view versions of Burke's Family Index, Burke's General Armory and Burke's Colonial gentry.

The old site at www.burkes-peerage.co.uk, run by Origins.net since 2008 until this month does not carry a redirect to the new address.

My wife Claire is planning to swim from the Scottish island of Cumbrae to the town of Largs on September 14th to raise money for local charity Gillian's Saltire Appeal, providing respite for families affected by cancer (Claire's mum and sister in Ireland have previously come through cancer, whilst my mum, based in England, currently has bladder cancer). Her Just Giving sponsorship page, with further details, is at http://www.justgiving.com/Claire-Paton1. If you can help to sponsor her, even by a wee amount, we'd be very grateful - many thanks!

Update on Burke's Peerage

The Burke's Peerage Twitter account at @BurkesPeerage has revealed that "All assets and intellectual property of Burke’s Peerage have been purchased by Burke’s Peerage Limited an Isle of Man company" and that "Burke's Peerage online service will recommence this month. Please await announcements".

The company appears to be based in Douglas, Isle of Man, and incorporated 3 JUL 2012, if the following site is correct: http://www.worldcompanieslist.com/isle-of-man/burke-x27-s-peerage-limited-127162c

Origins loses Burkes Peerage

The Burke's Peerage website, which was developed by, and operated by Origins.net since 2005 on behalf of Burke's Peerage (UK) Ltd, has been sold to another owner. The current website at www.burkes-peerage.co.uk will therefore cease to operate from September 1st 2013.

In an email to subscribers, Origins.net has apologised for the short notice and has intimated that it has received no communication from the new operator as to its future plans. Those with current subscriptions will be refunded a proportion of their subscription fee within the next two weeks.

Dr Ian Galbraith of Origins.net has added that "normal practice when subscription services terminate is for the "old" service provider to be permitted to provide service until the end of the subscription period, so that current subscription agreements can be honoured. But in this case the new owners are not allowing this" - the company has also apologised and stated that the new owner's intentions "has left us as much in the dark as you".

The full statement from Origins.net is online at www.burkes-peerage.co.uk

Burkes Peerage and Origins additions

From British Origins (www.origins.net) and BurkesPeerage (www.burkespeerage.com):

Burke's Landed Gentry Irish Families now searchable online

Burke's Landed Gentry Irish Families, lists land-owning families of Ireland, many of which record generations stretching back many centuries. Interestingly, many of the families recorded during the first half of the 20th Century were "formerly of", indicating they no longer held the lands to which the record referred. Their inclusion was justified because of the significant contribution they and their ancestors had made to Ireland's development down the centuries.

Full images of the publication are available to view online at www.burkespeerage.com.

Court of Husting Will Abstracts 1258-1688 on the National Wills Index

The court of Husting was a civil court, which had probate jurisdiction within the ancient City of London from medieval times through most of the 17th century when it became obsolete.

This volume contains indexed abstracts (summaries) to wills proved in the Court of Husting 1258–1688. These wills are detailed abstracts (summaries) of the original wills and contain the key information given in the original probate material. Copies of the original wills held at The London Metropolitan Archives.

The 3857 abstracts (containing over 10,000 names), include all personal names (testator, beneficiaries etc) with their relationships, place names, occupations, bequests of money and, in most cases, bequests of furniture, livestock, clothes and other possessions, and descriptions of lands. Also includes place of burial.
