Durham Records Online additions

New records available at Durham Records Online (www.durhamrecordsonline.com):

297 marriages at St. John Lee in Hexham district, Northumberland, from the beginning of 1813 to the end of 1837

Pittington baptisms 1574-1650 & marriages 1574-1812 updated
Alerted by some recently-discovered errors and omissions, we went over our earliest Pittington St. Laurence (Durham district) baptisms and marriages, rechecking them all against the parish registers. We checked 920 baptisms covering 1574-1650 and 1,085 marriages covering 1574-1812. These are some of our oldest transcripts, and we have made numerous corrections. Abodes and 482 marriage witnesses, which started appearing in 1754, were added. Some marriages were converted to marriage banns, as the banns were called at Pittington but the marriage did not actually occur there.

We discovered 96 baptisms that had been missed, with the bulk of these (84) between 1611 and 1620. We also realized we were missing all 83 marriages between 1655 and 1678, plus we found an additional 16 missing marriages sprinkled across various years. So if you're looking for somebody who might have been born or married at Pittington, and you previously couldn't find them, you might want to run another search.

Coming Soon:
1851 Gateshead census
Sherburn Hospital baptisms & burials
Newcastle St. John baptisms & burials

Further down the queue: Newburn, Southwick baptisms, Darlington Friends Burial Ground, more Methodist records, Durham St. Nicholas baptisms & marriages 1540-1700, Durham St. Giles baptisms & marriages 1584-1700, Slaley, Mere Knolls 1940+, Newcastle St Andrew, Heddon on the Wall

Annual Subscriptions
You can now buy an annual subscription to Durham Records Online for £96 or $155 US. With that, you get:

unlimited access to all the records on the site for 12 months from the time of purchase. No more rationing your site credits or having to go through the payment process every few weeks (or hours, for our power users) to buy new ones!
the ability to filter your search by Parish instead of the broader District – you can select one parish or multiple parishes from a new drop-down list that appears when a subscriber logs in. This is very helpful when you want to search in just one parish or one parish and its adjacent parishes.
for parish records, the search results list will show the parish in which the event occurred, rather than District
for marriages, the search results list will show the spouse, allowing you to avoid a click for details if that is not the marriage you seek
We will probably add some more search filters or other capabilities in the upcoming months.

We are not offering the option to pay in monthly installments at this time. If there is high demand for that, we will look into it. We will not auto-renew the subscription; we will remind you when it's time to re-subscribe and will offer you a "loyalty discount” on the subscription price. We are not offering to cash in your existing credits; they are still perfectly good and you can use them up at your leisure and buy a subscription later if you like.

We intend to always offer a wide range of options for everyone from the person who buys one record at a time to the person who needs to see hundreds of records per month. We will continue to offer both credits and the ability to buy a single record or as many as you want via the shopping cart.

If you're interested in a subscription, click Purchase, which can also be found near the login boxes.

Tynemouth burials 1841-1850

5,954 burials at Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland, covering 1841-1850.

We are grateful to the vicar who, going far beyond the call of duty, recorded the names of both parents of deceased children, fathers' occupations, husbands of deceased women (and often their occupations), and sometimes the cause of death or a reference to another burial of a family member. He also had the unusual habit of sometimes recording where the deceased was born or where they had previously lived.

Whittonstall baptisms & burials 1852-1880

Expanding our collection at Whittonstall St. Philip & St. James, we have added 231 baptisms and 216 burials from this church, covering 1852 through 1880. We now have baptisms and burials at this church from the start of the first register in 1774 to the end of 1880.

Whittonstall parish is in the Hexham district of Northumberland, just across the River Tyne from the County Durham parish of Ebchester, so many families can be found moving back and forth. Residences mentioned include Apperley Bank, Blackhill in Benfieldside (Durham), Bywell St. Peter, Ebchester Bridge End, Fairle or Fairle-may, Fell Close, Grey Mare Hill, Hedley, Highfield, Hindley, Hood's Close, Morrow-field, Newlands, Park House, Seldom Seen, Walkershank, West End, Whittonstall, and Wood House.

Petition to release Sunderland men who are prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars
There is a new article in the Local History section: Petition to release Sunderland men who are prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars
Around 16,000 British prisoners of war were confined in France between 1793 and 1815, some for many years. Among them were many sailors from the Sunderland area. Without their income-producing husbands, the wives (and children and even parents) of these men, left behind at home, suffered terrible poverty and deprivation. Desperate, they sent a petition to the Prince Regent, begging him to get the prisoners released, and including a list of the names of the prisoner's dependents and their relationships. For example:

Name
Relationship of prisoner
Years confined in France
Family left

637 baptisms and 541 burials covering 1843-1874 at Whitley Chapel (St. Helen) near Hexham in Hexham district, Northumberland, from the Bishop's Transcript. Whitley Chapel was originally a chapelry in the ancient parish of Hexham, but it became a separate parish in 1763, with its church dedicated to St. Helen. This parish is adjacent to the Durham parish of Hunstanworth, so families moved back and forth between the two places quite often.
