Computer problems at Glasgow Genealogy Centre

Glasgow Genealogy Centre has the following message online at https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=17698 for the registrars's service, which offers access to ScotlandsPeople:

Please note we are currently experiencing temporary technical difficulties in the Genealogy Centre.

As a result of this, we are currently not able to take bookings and the centre is currently unavailable, but services will resume as soon as possible .

If you have already booked an appointment, we will be in touch with you soon.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and will aim to be back up and running as soon as we can.

I have just called the centre and have been advised that there is a slight update on this. Last week, the centre was closed to bookings entirely. However, this week they are taking six bookings a day only, with only one slot left for this coming Thursday 21st, to see how things play out.

I blogged about the problems I personally experienced in Glasgow recently (see https://britishgenes.blogspot.com/2019/02/scotlandspeople-computer-issue-at.html), which have been ongoing for several weeks. Here's hoping that things will be mended soon.

In the meantime, if you are seeking to visit Glasgow to do research, call 0141 287 8365 or email genealogy@glasgow.gov.uk prior to a visit, to make sure the service is available.

New computer terminals improve Glasgow Genealogy Centre service

A quick note to say that the Glasgow Genealogy Centre at the Mitchell Library has now updated all of its computers - and the improvement in accessing the ScotlandsPeople service is immense.

A huge thank you to the team there for doing this, as for a while there doing research at the centre was quite a chore, with the old terminals being so slow. But a road test of the new set up on Thursday there was a joy!

For details on the service, visit http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/?articleid=3214.

Saturday service trial from Glasgow Genealogy Centre

The Glasgow Genealogy Centre (https://glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3214), operated by the Registrar's Service to provide access to the ScotlandsPeople computer system for £15 unlimited research a day, is running a pilot scheme to trial Saturday openings on an occasional basis. The next Saturday when it will be open is Saturday 22nd November 2014, from 9.30am to 4.00pm. There is in fact a session this coming Saturday 25th, but it is already fully booked.

The Burns Monument Centre already offers Saturday access on a weekly basis in Kilmarnock, though ironically, the provider of the service itself in Edinburgh does not. As not everybody works civil service hours, this is a very welcome development - here's hoping the Glasgow trial leads to something a bit more permanent!
