The National Archives at Kew (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk) has announced the demise of Documents Online once again, though it looks like it really means it this time (there's previously been a couple of false alarms!)! As of this weekend, Documents Online is to be switched off, as will the old Your Archives wiki site, the Equity Pleadings database and Person Search facilities, as Discovery rises into the ascendant.
Records will now be downloadable through Discovery, but an interesting new feature now announced is a preview screen offerings a low resolution image of the document of interest through an image viewer, which you can consult before purchase.

Documents Online unavailable over weekend
From the National Archives at Kew (http://nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/764.htm):
DocumentsOnline, our digital document delivery service, will be unavailable this weekend while we carry out essential work on the servers. This will take place from the afternoon of Friday 21 September until the morning of Monday 24 September.
Discovery, our new catalogue, will not be affected by this work, so you can continue to download documents from Discovery. Discovery will soon replace DocumentsOnline, so that you can search and download documents, where available online, all in one place.
Any website visitors who try to access DocumentsOnline over the weekend will be provided with a link to Discovery.

TNA changes in fees
The National Archives at Kew (www.nationalarchives.co.uk) is to increase its fees for records copies and services at the archive from July 30th 2012, the first rise since 2005.
At the same time, however, it looks like the online records available from TNA are in fact dropping slightly in price, from £3.50 each to £3.36.

Discovery and Documents Online update

Digitised records on Discovery

Through its new Discovery catalogue service the archive has now created a dedicated page entitled Our Online Records, which allows you to directly access and search through the collections as before. True to their word, they've also addressed a concern I raised some time past about Digital Microfilms, which has its own dedicated page also.

Documents Online - temporary stay of execution

DocumentsOnline to say farewell
Documents Online, the digital document delivery service from the National Archives (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk), is to breathe its last on May 9th, following the integration of its material into the new Discovery catalogue service from tomorrow (May 2nd).
For several years Documents Online has been an important portal for TNA, most notably with its military offerings, such as its WW1 medal index cards, as well as other collections such as its PCC wills offerings and death duty registers. It will be sorely missed by many!
Documents Online is (very nearly) dead - Long Live Documents Online!!!!

The National Archives launches Discovery
The National Archives has posted its plans for the roll out of its new Discovery catalogue (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/). The Documents Online service will be replaced by the new system at the end of this month, whilst the old catalogue will completely disappear by the end of June. I have no problems with the new set up, but I do have a question if anyone can answer! I find the Digital Microfilms link on Documents Online quite useful, and so am wondering if there will continue to be a list of what is available through that service somewhere on the site?
