Voices from the Past recordings on Ulster Historical Foundation site

From the Ulster Historical Foundation (www.ancestryireland.com):

Voices from the Past Lecture Series

Guild members can check out our latest additions to the Members’ Area as we have started to digitise audio recordings from some of our past conferences. Our ‘Voices from the past’ lecture series should prove to be a great resource for those interested in genealogy and history.

Some of these speakers unfortunately are no longer with us and thus the recordings are a rare opportunity to enjoy some very distinguished academics and archivists giving advice on using historical sources in Ireland. This week’s additions include:

  • Valuation records: A valuable resource for Genealogists by Trevor Parkhill
  • New Light at the Cape of Good Hope by Prof. Leslie McCracken
  • Family Research in the Registry of Deeds by Dr Katharine Brown
  • Sources in PRONI relating to education by Dr Roger Strong

All these recordings are available in the members area of our website, with Dr Katherine Brown's lecture on Family Research in the Registry of Deeds available on our homepage.

The society has also announced that its January Sale has been extended, offering 50% off all birth, death and marriage records until February 9th 2015.

(With thanks to the UHF)

The Original Record - half price sale

The Original Records website (www.theoriginalrecord.com) has just announced a Half-Price Sale for a limited, but undefined, period. The prices of all subscriptions and scans have been reduced by 50%, but this does not include DVDs/Ebooks.

The Original Record is one of those sites that I desperately want to sing the praises of - it has some genuinely useful and rare digitised materials on it for all of the British Isles - but it has always had the most bizarre payment and search systems, making it difficult to engage with and predominantly useful for those carrying out one-name studies. A half price sale is therefore a very welcome development, and I would encourage you to explore it - but you may still find some records to be pricey and the experience frustrating.

Chris

My new book, Tracing Your Irish Family History on the Internet, is now available from Pen and Sword. My next Pharos Scottish course, Scotland 1750-1850: Beyond the Old Parish Registers, starts May 15th - see http://britishgenes.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/scotland-1750-1850-beyond-oprs-starts.html. FamilyTree DNA sale

Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com) has another sale on the go - here's the blurb from its newsletter:

DNA DAY SALE EXTENDED******
This year we began our commemoration of National DNA Day on April 19th. This coincides with the celebration by the National Human Genome Research Institute and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History's partnership to celebrate the 1953 discovery of the double helix and the 2003 completion of the Human Genome Project, which was April 19th.

However, DNA Day is celebrated worldwide on April 25th. Therefore, we've extended our sale! The usual conditions apply - orders must be made and paid for by 11:59 p.m. CDT on Thursday, April 25th.

Remember, we’ll offer a promotion on Y-DNA upgrades around Father’s Day, so be on the lookout for those details.

Full details on the discounts are available at www.familytreedna.com/products.aspx

National Archives book sale at Kew

The National Archives has a book sale just now with 30% off 18 books from the History Press - for details visit www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/bookshop/default.aspx.

Probably the most significant reductions are Mark Herber's Ancestral Trails (£17.50, from £25), and Cecil R. Humphery-Smith's Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers (£35, from £50), two of the most useful guides for English/British research by far, but there are many other great titles included in the list.

TNA is also doing a deal on my new book, Tracing Your Irish Family History on the Internet, selling the book at £9.99 (RRP £12.99). It's apparently this week's best seller, and TNA users are a very discerning bunch :) lol - details at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/bookshop/default.aspx
