From the Guild of One Name Studies (https://one-name.org):
The recording of the November webinar 'All about the Guild' is now available to all at https://one-name.org/2018-webinar-series-no-11/
The recording includes a tour of the website, a discussion of the benefits and services the Guild offers, a discussion of the seminars planned for 2019 as well as an overview of what is planned for the 40th anniversary celebration at the conference/annual general meeting in March 2019, and a bit about the Pharostutors courses for one-name studies.
Some of what's described on the website is accessible to Guild members only - hopefully an encouragement to join the Guild!
Speakers include Tessa Keough, Alan Moorhouse, and Julie Goucher, with Paul Featherstone in the background.
There are also several handouts you can download at the link above.

Guild of One Name Studies on FamilySearch
The following announcement comes from the Guild of One Name Studies (www.one-name.org):
LONDON, U.K., and SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (September 6, 2016)—The Guild of One-Name Studies, a charitable organization that promotes facts about given surnames, and FamilySearch International, a nonprofit and the largest genealogy organization in the world, announced today that the guild’s collections will now be searchable at FamilySearch.org. The partnership gives guild members another source for preserving their great work while also allowing more researchers across the globe to benefit from exploring the variant spellings of their personal surnames and possibly connect with others throughout the world who have the same last name.
The study of one’s last name (or surname) involves researching all known occurrences of that particular surname in all identifiable resources worldwide, as opposed to researching only the ancestors or descendants of a person. These rich compiled studies can assist a family history researcher to see the geographical distribution of surnames in their tree over centuries, which can help in reconstructing family lines bearing variants of those names. A common hope of customers who use surname studies is to identify the actual geographic locale of origin of a family surname. This outcome could very well happen for unique surnames, but common surnames that reflect an occupation (such as “Farmer” or “Fisher”) or patronymic-type surnames (such as “Johnson” or “Williamson”) may not have a single place of origin.
Cliff Kemball, guild publicity manager, said, “The partnership with FamilySearch gives guild members another method of preserving their one-name study data. Their data is fully preserved for the long term, while still remaining within the control of Guild members, who may update, replace, or delete it as their work develops.”
The guild was founded in 1979 and has over 2,980 members studying over 8,935 individual surnames. The Guild of One-Name Studies website launched on April 1, 2016, and is continually expanding its list of surnames. The guild expects the volume of data submitted by guild members to increase significantly now that they can make their research contributions online. And teaming up with FamilySearch.org ensures that more people are making interesting discoveries about their surnames.
David Rencher, the chief genealogy officer for FamilySearch, said, “The rigorous standards and guidelines required by the Guild of One-Name Studies for members of the guild make this the highest quality data available for these surnames. Those who administer and oversee the collection of this data have spent decades collecting all instances of the surnames from a wide variety of records. Since many of these sources are yet to be made available on the Internet, this new set of records on FamilySearch.org is a rich new source of information.”
To see if your surname has been researched by the guild community, go to www.FamilySearch.org. In the top menu, hover your mouse pointer over Search, and in the drop-down menu, click Genealogies. In the Last Names field, enter the surname you are interested in researching. Click the down arrow on the blue All button, and click Guild of One-name Studies. Then click the blue Search button.
More information about the Guild can be found at www.one-name.org, where researchers can also register their own surnames.

Guild of One Name Studies Members' Website Project
From the Guild of One Name Studies (http://one-name.org):
The Members’ Website Project
The Guild of One-Name Studies has implemented a major new project.– The Guild’s Members’ Website Project. The main purpose of the Members’ Websites Project is to enable the website of each participating member to continue indefinitely as a publicly accessible website after the member has died or ceased to be a member of the Guild. This is a ground-breaking project for the Guild and goes to the heart of the objectives of the Guild’s Constitution which are "to advance the education of the public in one-name studies, and. to promote the preservation and publication of the resultant data, and to maximize its accessibility to interested members of the public. The project and its infrastructure have been through some extensive pilot running and have been thoroughly and successfully tested. The project is planned to go live on the 1st April 2016.
In September 2014 the Guild Committee approved in principle a project to host members’ one-name study websites and gave full support in the following November to a detailed implementation plan. At the end of February 2016, the Guild Committee gave approval for the project to go live.
The Members' Websites Project, which is to be launched on 1st April after an extensive trial period, is designed to provide a safe haven for Guild members' one-name study websites. A member who has registered the surname concerned with the Guild can now copy an existing one-name study website or upload a newly created website to the Project's hosting facility. It will then be accessible to viewers the world over via the address yourstudysurname.one-name.net, although existing personal domain names can still also be used.
After uploading their website, a member will still be able to edit, delete and add to its pages. When they pass away or cease membership, it will be preserved by the Guild and available to public to view just as they left it. Research data, surname trees, images, histories, hypotheses, conclusions - all will thus be available to future generations.
By displaying excellence in one-name study websites the Members' Websites Project has specifically addressed the Guild Vision that the Guild should “strengthen its position as the centre of excellence for surname studies.” It will also increase the visibility of individual members’ websites since the Guild’s main website will act as a portal to the Project. The Project aims to get existing members to make effective use of current technology whatever their computer skill level are whilst, at the same time, encourage new members to join the Guild.
Since the proposal to develop a trial Members’ Website Project was approved in September 2014, extensive test have been on going to ensure that a significant variety of website could be maintained and hosted on a Guild website. During the trial period the Guild have signed up 96 one-name study websites, of which 76 are now live, covering around a half a million names. Full details of the Project are now available on the Members' Websites Project pages at http://one-name.org/the-members-websites-project-mwp
NB: The Guild will also be at Who Do You Think You Are Live event at Birmingham NEC from April 7th-9th 2016. Sign up to the Guild at the event for a £1 discount on the normal rate and receive a special “show time only” goody bag. Visit NEC Stand T97-T99.

Guild of One-Name Studies membership increases
From the Guild of One-Name Studies (www.one-name.org):
The Guild of One-Name Studies has reached another membership milestone. In 2015 the Guild of One-Name Studies broke all its previous memberships records by recruiting some 418 new members with a further 15 previous Guild members re-joining the Guild during the year. A total of 433 new members. This milestone follows a very successful year for the Guild of One-Name Studies in 2015 when the Guild achieved its highest membership ever – some 2,847 members.
Since the 1st January 2015 some 418 members joined the Guild of One-Name Studies, 233 were from the UK, 90 from the US, 14 from New Zealand, 43 from Australia, 16 from Canada and 9 from the Republic of Ireland. The remainder were from various other countries. 44% of the new members were from non-UK regions, which is a valuable step towards increased worldwide membership for the Guild. There were also 15 returning members: 9 from the UK, 3 from the US, 1 from Australia and 2 from Canada. The Guild now has 2,847 members spread across the world, studying over 8,700 individual surnames.
The continued increase in the Guild’s membership every year since the Guild was founded in 1979 (an achievement not many Family History organisations have managed) is a testament to the popularity of the Guild and the benefits it offers to its members.
Details of all the Guild facilities can be found at: www.one-name.org/about-the-guild/membership-benefits where you can find out:
• more about undertaking a One-Name Study
• the benefits of joining the Guild of One-Name Studies, and the assistance members of the Guild can provide to anyone researching their family history on any of the 8,700-plus names currently being researched.
Cliff Kemball, the Guild’s Publicity Officer, said today:
“This is yet another significant milestone for the Guild of One-Name Studies and is a testament to the continued development of the Guild internationally and the benefits membership provides. We hope that this trend continues into 2016 and beyond and reaffirms the Guild as the world’s leading organisation for One-Name Studies.”

Guild of One Name Studies 7000th member
From the Guild of One Name Studies (www.one-name.org):
The Guild of One-Name Studies has reached another milestone. Today the 7,000th member joined the Guild of One-Name Studies.Rosemary Potter, who lives in Bournemouth, UK. This milestone follows a very successful year for the Guild of One-Name Studies in 2014-15 when the Guild is likely to achieve its highest number of new members ever.
Since the 1st November 2014 312 new members joined the Guild of One-Name Studies, 181 were from the UK, 70 from the US, 6 from New Zealand, 28 from Australia, 16 from Canada and 4 from Ireland. The remainder were from various other countries. 42% of the new members were from non-UK regions, which is a valuable step towards increased worldwide membership for the Guild. The Guild now has over 2,790 members spread across the world, studying over 8,750 individual surnames.
Rosemary Potter is studying the surname Wixey, with the variants Wicksey, Wixcey, Weeksey and Wickey, and hopes that the Guild of One-Name Studies will enable her to help and link up with other people researching the name. Rosemary stated that she was delighted to join the Guild of One-Name Studies and looked forward to taking advantage of the numerous services and benefits the Guild provides. In 1881 there were 139 instances of the name in the UK census and by 1998 the frequency of the surname had increased to 204. The frequency and distribution of the Wixey name makes it an ideal example of a name suitable for a small one-name study.
In recognition of becoming the 7,000th member of the Guild of One-Name Studies, the Guild has extended Rosemary's membership a further year to the 31st October 2017.
Details of all the Guild facilities can be found at:
www.one-name.org/about-the-guild/membership-benefits
where you can find out:
Cliff Kemball, the Guild's Publicity Manager, said today:
"Attaining our 7,000th member is a significant milestone for the Guild of One-Name Studies and is a testament to the continued development of the Guild internationally and the benefits membership provides. We are sure that Rosemary will benefit significantly from joining the Guild and that she will gradually take advantage of the services and facilities that the Guild offers."

- the benefits of joining the Guild of One-Name Studies, and the assistance members of the Guild can provide to anyone researching their family history on any of the 8,750-plus names currently being researched.
