TheGenealogist adds Worcestershire baptisms and Wiltshire headstones
From TheGenealogist (www.thegenealogist.co.uk):
More than 144,700 Worcestershire Baptism records added to TheGenealogist and a further 20,000 individuals on Headstones
TheGenealogist is releasing the records of 144,793 individuals added to their Worcestershire Baptisms (in Partnership with Malvern FHS) and an additional 20,000 individuals on headstones from the UKIndexer project where volunteers help their fellow genealogists by indexing and/or photographing the monumental inscriptions in churchyards and cemeteries.
Headstones being released this week includes the transcriptions and the images for those at St Giles, Imber (pictured) on Salisbury Plain, useful for those with ancestors buried there as it is only open a few days a year. St Giles' Church is in the deserted village of Imber, Wiltshire and was built in the late 13th or early 14th century. The village falls within the British Army's training grounds on Salisbury Plain and is deserted as a result of the entire civilian population being evicted in 1943 to provide an exercise area for American troops preparing for the invasion of Europe during the Second World War. Once the war came to an end the villagers would have liked to return but were not allowed. The church today is without its pews and its font was moved to Brixton Deverill while the pulpit has been sent to Winterbourne Stoke. St Giles’ seating, bell and two effigies are now housed at Edington Priory. The Church of St Giles is open for visitors and services on specified days of the year when the Ministry of Defence allows access. St Giles is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade I listed building, and is now a redundant church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
These fully searchable records released this week are available now to Diamond subscribers of TheGenealogist.

- Discover dates of ancestors’ baptisms
- Glean names of parents of those baptised in Worcestershire
- Headstones give dates and name details of those buried and sometimes familiar relationships
- Memorials can reveal information not recorded elsewhere for ancestors

TheGenealogist adds War Memorial and headstone records
From TheGenealogist (www.thegenealogist.co.uk):
TheGenealogist adds another 64,920 War Memorial records and 13,487 new headstone records
This week TheGenealogist has expanded its growing headstone and war memorial record collections with some interesting new additions to both. The headstone records cover 53 new cemeteries and the various war memorials are from Australia, Britain, Canada and the USA.
The International Headstone collection is an ongoing project where every stone photographed or transcribed earns volunteers credits, which they can spend on subscriptions at TheGenealogist.co.uk or products from GenealogySupplies.com. If you would like to join, you can find out more about the scheme at: https://ukindexer.co.uk/headstone/
Also published online this week are an additional 64,920 War Memorial records which include a complete roll of honour for both WW1 and WW2 for Shetland, with men's units and the Shetland village in which they had resided. There are other war memorials in this release that cover the country including the Abercarn Tinplaters Memorial Institute in Wales. There are plaques and monuments in Bedford, Bolton, Lancashire, London, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Warwickshire and even further afield in Canada, Western Australia and the USA. One of the Canadian memorials is a fascinating, but sadly very worn, WW2 memorial
from Calgary in Canada that names 227 aircrew from Australia and New Zealand who died while training in Calgary, revealing just how dangerous WW2 aviation was.
From the USA TheGenealogist has uploaded some WW1 and WW2 war memorials from New York, including a fine one in Battery Park. This is a roll of those men and women who lost their lives in the Atlantic coastal waters in WW2 and had no known grave as a result of U-boat action. The war memorial gives researchers the ranks, units and the US state from which they had come, and the shockingly large number of Americans included is a salutary lesson when in Britain we are often only aware of our own countrymen/women who died at sea from enemy action against the convoys.
Lastly there are a number of Boer War memorials - for example the tribute within Blackpool Town Hall that commemorates the 74 Blackpool men who volunteered to join various units for service in South Africa.
These new records are all available as part of the Diamond Subscription at TheGenealogist.
To find out more about the UKIndexer volunteer project, you can read the following article: https://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/featuredarticles/2018/family-history-can-be-a-rewarding-hobby-790/

We are releasing a 1921 census substitute, using a wide variety of records including Trade and Residential Directories of the time.
New decades of BT27 Passenger Lists and Emigration Records will become available.
Our International Headstone Project will be expanded with more Commonwealth Cemeteries added.
More worldwide War Memorials added to our comprehensive database.
Following on from our release of over 230 million U.S. records in 2016, we will be launching more U.S. records in 2017.
New & Improved Census Images
Thanks to new technology and new Silver Halide Film provided by The National Archives, we have now been able to re-scan the 1891 census with improved resolution and quality. This combination of improved readability and new transcripts will help locate your ancestors and view the relevant images with a superior grayscale format. Our “Deep Zoom” images have over 5 times the resolution of previous images. They will be lightening fast to view thanks to the technology used in our new image interface. We will launch these new images in early 2017.
Look out for these exciting new developments and more in 2017 at TheGenealogist.co.uk

Scottish monumental inscriptions survey
Bruce Bishop has recently reported to SAFHS (www.safhs.org.uk) the findings of a short survey of the monumental inscriptions records that have been gathered by Scottish based family history societies. The full survey is noted at http://www.safhs.org.uk/news.asp (fourth story down) and includes the following state of play summary at present:
Of the 3543 sites across Scotland, the inscriptions in 2587 have been published, there are 475 unpublished records, usually where the site is too small to warrant its own publication, or where the transcriptions are in the process of being checked. Work is known to be in progress on 71 sites across Scotland. This shows us that out of the total of 3543 sites. Some 3133 have either been completed or are currently being researched.
The full report details where many publications are held within the country. For summary details on all known collections, also visit http://www.safhs.org.uk/burialgrounds.asp

A huge thanks to Eddie Connolly (of Eddie's Extracts fame) for sharing a link via Facebook to a series of monumental inscriptions that have been placed online for several graveyards in the greater Coleraine area in Northern Ireland, as recorded by the Coleraine branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society.

Jersey headstone inscriptions added to The Genealogist
It's all been very quiet from TheGenealogist (www.thegenealogist.co.uk) in terms of any news releases, so I've had a quick look on the site to see what's been happening. The latest news is that some 22,000 records have been added to their Headstone project with inscriptions from 23 cemeteries from the Island of Jersey. Also available are inscriptions from 13 cemeteries from Buckinghamshire, Devon, Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire, Somerset, The West Midlands and Wiltshire.

Borders FHS releases Stow monumental inscriptions CD
From Borders Family History Society (www.bordersfhs.org.uk):
Borders Family History Society are delighted to announce the publication on CD of the long awaited Stow Monumental Inscriptions.
Stow was formerly partly in Edinburghshire (now mostly Midlothian) and Selkirkshire, Scotland.
The CD contains transcriptions of the gravestone inscriptions and photographs of all the stones, 671 in total, in both the old churchyard of St. Mary's of Wedale as well as the new cemetery in Stow in the Scottish Borders. All are indexed by surname, first name and date of death.
It also includes a list of the Parishioners of Stow in 1530, the 1694 Hearth Tax, the 1798 Militia List, the 1801 population list (1380 individuals) and an 1830 list of families with burial plots in the Old Churchyard; details of War Memorials, Rolls of Honour and ministers down the ages.
There are also some fine photographs of the Church and Churchyard including an early etching and quite a bit of general historical background. It’s an absolute must especially for anyone with a connection to Stow parish, with a family member buried in Stow or just an interest in local history.
The Society is very indebted to all who assisted over the years including the late Nancy McLaughlan, Fay Mackay, Gwen Stein and Elma Fleming.

The price is £10 plus postage. To order, contact their Sales Convenor, Mary Thomson on 01896 756798 or by post to 52 Overhaugh St, Galashiels, TD1 1DP, Scotland or by email at bfhssales@bordersfhs.org.uk.

Limerick's Life website
Thanks to James McLaren of the Channel Islands FHS for flagging up Sharon Slater's Limerick's Life website by email. Located at http://limerickslife.com it has some interesting record sets, for example a list of those who died in the Irish Civil War in Limerick in July 1922 - see http://limerickslife.com/civil-war-july-1922/. There's a few other collections such as headstone inscription and passenger lists. Well worth a look if you have Limerick connections.
