Labour MSP finds family treasures whilst canvassing on Scottish referendum trail
There has been a Scottish independence referendum campaign running for the last two years, with the culmination taking place next week, on Thursday September 18th, when here in Scotland we will decide whether to leave the United Kingdom after 300 years, and to reconvene as an independent nation. The latest polls over the weekend show that the Yes campaign (for independence) has just taken the lead for the first time, though there is no complacency on either side about the result - it's a very closely fought contest, and something I have been actively involved in myself on the Yes side for a few months now. I have kept the referendum and its politics out of this blog for the most part, but there was one story that did grab my eye this morning - and it actually involves a remarkable genealogy tale concerning an MSP out canvassing for the No side!
Labour's Neil Findlay MSP was out canvassing in Pumpherston, West Lothian, when he decided to knock on the door of his grandmother's old house to solicit support for his side in the campaign. What he discovered is probably something all of us would give our eye teeth for! The full story is at http://www.sundaypost.com/news-views/scotland/independence-referendum/family-treasure-find-for-canvassing-msp-1.562465
I should add that this is all the publicity that I am giving to the No campaign! lol :) But a great tale, that shows you just never know where those family history resources may lie, and why tracking down where your family once lived may be more fruitful than you think!

Statistical Accounts of Scotland blog launches
The University of Edinburgh's EDINA department has launched a new blog detailing items and finds from the Statistical Accounts of Scotland. It can be found at http://statacc.blogs.edina.ac.uk/.
The first two Statistical Accounts were recorded in each Scottish parish in the 1790s and the 1830s/1840s, with a third account carried out in the 20th century, and a recent fourth version for East Lothian. The first two are digitised and freely available at http://edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/. They carry an enormous amount of information on he make up of each parish, including religious affiliations of inhabitants, employment available, landowners details, history and more. There's a bit more about them in a blog post I wrote four years ago, accessible at http://walkingineternity.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/statistical-accounts-of-scotland.html, but the main site is the place to visit for all the background!

Distinguished Conduct Medal database on The Genealogist
From The Genealogist (www.thegenealogist.co.uk):
First World War medal winning heroes now available online at TheGenealogist.co.uk
Our new medal release gives full details of heroic soldiers and their deeds in the First World War and The Second Boer War to aid you in your search for more information on your ancestor’s war exploits.
Analysis of these newly released Distinguished Conduct Medal records uncovers stories of heroism and exceptional bravery from ordinary soldiers. The medal was instituted in 1854, but the desperate fighting and struggle of the First World War saw the medal awarded to a larger amount of soldiers for the first time.
TheGenealogist.co.uk has released complete new records of Non Commissioned Officer’s and Other Ranks who were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in The First World War and The Second Boer War.
Uniquely these new records show full details of the Recipients Medal Card combined with a link to The London Gazette which in numerous cases contains full details of the heroic deed that won them the medal. The Gazette is the one of the official journals of the British Government and can be classed as one of the oldest surviving English newspapers.
The records contain full details of the soldier awarded the medal –their name, rank, regiment, date of medal citation and details of their heroism in battle, all easily found using ‘SmartSearch’ on TheGenealogist.
Mark Bayley, Head of Online Content at TheGenealogist concludes: “We are continually making more historic military records available and our new DCM Collection with its link to the London Gazette brings all the information together for the family historian. Our collection of military records goes from strength to strength with more to come.”
To find out the extreme bravery of our soldiers and their courage in the line of duty see the dedicated page on TheGenealogist.co.uk/DCM. There you will find photographs, stories, statistics and a free search facility.
