National Library of Scotland news

A flurry of announcements from the National Library of Scotland (www.nls.uk)...

From May, the library's free Discover NLS magazine is to be produced almost entirely online to save on costs, with just a handful of print copies to be produced for the library building itself. You can read the magazine at www.nls.uk/about-us/publications/discover-nls

In the library's latest newsletter, there are also a few interesting items. To complement the Word on the Street collection of Scottish broadsides, the forerunners of modern newspapers, the library has now added 2300 English broadside ballads from the Balcarres Heritage papers, part of the Crawford (Bibliotheca Lindesiana) Collection on long term loan to the facility. These have their own dedicated page at http://digital.nls.uk/english-ballads/pageturner.cfm?id=74472158. There's a range of subjects covered from 'Courtship and Marriage' to 'Wars'.

There's also news of a new iPhone/iPod/iPad app for those with Moray connections, entitled Great Escapes: Moray, and featuring information on many local features (including Elgin Cathedral), as well as several historic maps (the 1868 OS map is with the app, others can be downloaded and added). For more details visit www.nls.uk/learning-zone/great-escapes.

(With thanks to the NLS)
