BNA Irish newspapers added to FindmyPast Ireland
FindmyPast Ireland (www.findmypast.ie) has added the missing part of the British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) to its collection, with The Belfast Morning News, The Belfast Newsletter, The Cork Examiner, The Dublin Evening Mail, The Freeman's Journal and The Sligo Champion now available. Prior to this release FindmyPast UK (www.findmypast.co.uk) had made the British Newspaper Archive available on its site, but without the Irish titles. The BNA is a ten year project between Brightsolid and the British Library, which aims to get 40 million pages of newspaper content online.
The Irish titles should presumably be available shortly on any FindmyPast platform via a world subscription, or on the British and Irish subscription via FindmyPast UK.

Brightsolid splits into two companies
Big news from Dundee!
Brightsolid, parent company of FindmyPast and Genes Reunited, and partners in ScotlandsPeople (with the National Records of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon), the British Newspaper Archive (with the British Library), and Lives of the First World War (with the Imperial War Museum), is being split into two businesses - Brightsolid Online Publishing, dealing with its genealogical interests, and Brightsolid Online Technologies, dealing with its various IT interests.
As part of the changes, current heid yin Chris van der Kuyl is stepping into a new role of Strategic Advisor to the DC Thompson board (DC Thompson is the main Dundee based media group behind Brightsolid), and in his stead comes a new CEO for Brightsolid Online Publishing - and therefore a new boss for FMP and Genes Reunited - in the form of Annelies van den Belt. She was previously with SUP Media, the leading digital publisher in Russia, with previous roles also at ITV, Telegraph Media Group and News International. Heading up Brightsolid Online Technologies as CEO is Richard Higgs.
Ms van den Belt said: “The opportunity at brightsolid to build a truly global digital family history business is an exciting one. brightsolid has the potential through its current assets and footprint in the English speaking markets to become a leading global player. Furthermore, being part of the DC Thomson Group is an exciting professional proposition and I look forward to working with the Board and to sharing my digital knowledge and experience going forward in developing and creating further digital products.”

Lives of the First World War project from IWM and Brightsolid
More news on a huge project development from the Imperial War Museum and Brightsolid, which was first announced at Who Do You Think You Are Live in February:

Lives of the First World War
IWM (Imperial War Museums) and brightsolid, the online publishing and technology arm of publishing group DC Thomson, are working in partnership to create Lives of the First World War – an innovative and interactive digital platform to mark the First World War Centenary.
Lives of the First World War will hold the stories of over 8 million men and women who served in uniform and worked on the home front. It will be the official place for communities across the world to connect, explore, reveal and share even more about these people’s lives.
This innovative platform will bring fascinating records from museums, libraries, archives and family collections across the globe together in one place. The team behind Lives of the First World War are working with national and international institutions and archives to make this happen.
Over the course of the centenary, Lives of the First World War will become the permanent digital memorial to more than 8 million men and women from across Britain and the Commonwealth - a significant digital legacy for future generations.
The platform will go live later this year, in time for the start of centenary commemorations from summer 2014. Further information, including a short film about Lives of the First World War can now be found at www.livesofthefirstworldwar.org.
Diane Lees, Director-General of IWM said: “The Imperial War Museum was established while the First World War was still being fought to ensure that future generations would understand the causes and consequences of the war and to remember the men and women who played their role.

We will be encouraging people of all ages, in all communities to join us in this project to actively remember these men and women.

Scottish wills soon to be expanded online
The Brightsolid team has released a press notice celebrating the ScotlandsPeople website's first ten years. Included is a comment on the further provision of online access to wills up to 1925, which is being posited for release later this year:

The family history website, www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk, celebrates its tenth birthday in September 2012.
Officially launched in mid-September 2002, ScotlandsPeople was one of the first genealogy sites to arrive on the web. The site now contains over 90 million digital records and corresponding images, and adds new sets of fully-searchable historical records on a regular basis.
With over one million registered users from across the world, the website remains the biggest online resource for Scottish census, birth, marriage and death records. The website has evolved through a decade of huge technological growth and in a time where interest in genealogy has soared.
Chris van der Kuyl, the CEO of brightsolid, the company that enables ScotlandsPeople for the National Records of Scotland, said:

More India Office records to be digitised
Serious news for those interested in Indian research - the Gulf state of Qatar is sponsoring the digitisation of half a million British Library based India Office records in a new three year project that will eventually see the records made available online for free. This is a separate project to the deal previously announced last year between the British Library and Brightsolid to digitise much of the India Office collection's parish register holdings (see http://scottishancestry.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/india-office-records-and-uk-electoral.html).

Find my Past TV series recommissioned
The Find my Past TV series, produced by independent company Lion Television for the Yesterday channel, and sponsored by Dundee based Brightsolid, has been recommissioned for a second series. A further ten x sixty minute length episodes have been commissioned for transmission in the last quarter of 2012 and first quarter of 2013.

Friends Reunited relaunch
The social media site Friends Reunited (www.friendsreunited.co.uk), sister site to Genes Reunited (www.genesreunited.co.uk), is getting a facelift and something of a more genealogical purpose, being restyled as a memories site 12 years after it was first launched, rather than just as a simple bridge to old friends from school.

Brightsolid's growing US army
Scottish based Brightsolid (www.brightsolid.com) has announced a series of new appointments for its new US based division, with which it hopes to break into the American market. Here's the release:
Brightsolid online publishing, a leading online provider of historical and genealogical content, today announces that top genealogist D. Joshua Taylor has joined its new US operation with immediate effect, as business development manager and media spokesperson.
D. Joshua Taylor, MA, MLS is one of America’s most prominent genealogists – a prolific genealogical researcher, speaker and author, who has also received numerous awards for his work. Adept at media interviews, he has twice been featured on the NBC series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’, helping both Sarah Jessica Parker and Ashley Judd trace their family trees.
“We’re thrilled to have recruited such a dynamic and talented genealogist to represent us both to the media and the wider genealogical community”, says Neil Curtis, brightsolid’s new Senior Vice-President (SVP) of North America.
Speaking about his appointment, Taylor says: “Having seen what brightsolid has achieved on the UK genealogy scene, I’m excited about helping them fulfill their huge potential in the US.”
British-owned brightsolid has itself been at the forefront of technological innovations in family history for over three decades. It hosts over a billion genealogical records across its family of brands and was this month voted Best Genealogy Organization in the online Gene Awards.
As part of its move into North America, brightsolid is sponsoring RootsTech 2012, the major family history and technology conference, taking place in Salt Lake City from February 2-4 2012, where Taylor himself will be giving three talks. D. Joshua Taylor, MA, MLS is one of America’s most prominent genealogists – a prolific genealogical researcher, speaker and author, who has also received numerous awards for his work. Adept at media interviews, he has twice been featured on the NBC series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’, helping both Sarah Jessica Parker and Ashley Judd trace their family trees.

Brightsolid's new baby - CensusRecords
OK, so it is not quite what I thought it might be! It would appear that the new announcement about to be made by Brightsolid at RootsTech might be for a new website called CensusRecords (www.censusrecords.com). The Genealogy in Time newsletter has picked up on it (see www.genealogyintime.com/GenealogyResources/NewGenealogyRecords/newest_genealogy_records_on_the_internet.html?awt_l=E0ZLd&awt_m=JmNteEts_Qk.Vy), and from the description it would seem to be another US census website. Behind the scenes of newspaper project

The project is a partnership between Brightsolid and the British Library, and the article looks at costs, process, copyright issues, royalties and much more. It's quite an eye opener.
