DeceasedOnline introduces new annual subscription tiers

New Subscriptions

At Deceased Online we are introducing new ways to improve and expand our range of data, adding records from a greater number of cemeteries and crematoria across the UK, and giving our users the benefit of more regular additions of new records.

These improvement plans will include changes to the way we offer annual subscriptions.

Our users range from the occasional family historian through to corporate users viewing many thousands of records a year. Until now we have not differentiated between types of user, but offered a single annual subscription option at £89 for unlimited views of most of our records. We’ve managed to resist the pressure to increase this price for over 5 years, since we first introduced subscriptions, even while users were expressing surprise at the generosity of the unlimited views offered.

Users can still purchase a subscription for £89, although the terms have changed slightly. We have decided, in line with other on-line genealogy websites, to offer a range of subscriptions to suit customers according to how heavily they would like to use the site.

To do this we now offer three annual subscription options, each with a different limit to the number of records viewable.

The basic annual subscription, now called ‘Silver’, will remain at £89. However, we have introduced a limit of 450 record views for this subscription*, which we calculate will not affect the majority of our users. For heavier professional and corporate users of the site we have introduced the ‘Gold’ subscription at £249 for a maximum of 2000 views, and the ‘Platinum’ subscription at £499 for 5000 views.

We feel this is a fair and long-overdue revision of our subscriptions policy, which will help us to be more cost effective and allow us to expand and improve the website, which is what our customers want.

*Existing subscriptions will remain unlimited until expiry

Terms and Conditions

We have amended Section 6 of the website Terms and Conditions to reflect the changes to subscriptions.

We have also in Section 10 clarified the types of user we allow to use the website. In particular we have made it clear that it is an abuse for registered users to distribute paid-for information from our website, via social media or by any other method, to others who are pursuing their own separate family history enquiries.

Cheshire East Records Now on Deceased Online

Cheshire East's cemeteries and crematoria are managed by Orbitas Bereavement Services, a company owned and controlled by Cheshire East Borough Council. There are now 130,000 records from the Crewe office available on www.deceasedonline.com. Records for the Macclesfield area have been digitised and will be released later in the year.

The area contains many towns associated with the industrial revolution and particularly textile mills; many specialising in silk, such as Congleton, Macclesfield, and Sandbach. Crewe is famous as one of the centres of the nascent railway industry of the early 19th century, as well as a centre for Rolls Royce engine manufacturing. Cheshire is also famous for its cheese, and Nantwich has hosted the International Cheese Awards since 1897.

The cemeteries in Cheshire East are the final resting place of many notable Victorians, such as William Hope, paranormal investigator and pioneer of 'spirit photography'. Paranormal investigator Harry Price proved Hope's methods fraudulent by marking Hope's photographic plates, and finding the resulting spirit photographs to be presented on unmarked plates. Hope formed the Crewe Circle Spiritualist group and after his death in 1933 was buried in Crewe cemetery.

All records for the Crewe area's six cemeteries and one crematorium are available on Deceased Online. These are:
• Congleton Cemetery – 500 records from 2004 to 2015
• Coppenhall Cemetery - 10,400 records from 1861 to 2015
• Crewe Cemetery - 51,750 records from 1872 to 2016
• Nantwich Cemetery - 11,150 records from 1870 to 2015 *
• Sandbach Cemetery - 3,950 records from 1935 to 2015
• Weston Cemetery - 1,150 records from 1908 to 2015
• Crewe Crematorium - 52,100 records from 1954 to 2009

The records comprise digital scans of all burial registers or cremation indexes and grave details for each of the graves and their occupants.

* There is an historic lack of accuracy in some of the original register entries of older records in Nantwich cemetery. There are some duplicated records but as we have no way of ascertaining the correct grave details in these cases, we have included them for the completeness of the data.

West Yorkshire records added to DeceasedOnline

Halifax and Brighouse - first of the Calderdale cemeteries now on Deceased Online

Over the next few weeks, all records for seven cemeteries and the crematorium managed by Calderdale Council in West Yorkshire, will be added to www.deceasedonline.com.

Immediately available are records for two historic sites in the region, Brighouse Cemetery and Lister Lane (aka Halifax General) Cemetery in Halifax. This first batch of records dates back to 1842 and features some excellent register scans that include fascinating personal and social history, which will be very useful for family history hunters.

The fields recorded in these registers include not just full names, ages and other burial information but also the “rank, trade or profession” and, in many instances, the names of the parents.

As well as digital scans of registers, the records available on Deceased Online also include grave details, indicating all those buried in each grave. There are also section maps for Brighouse Cemetery indicating the section of the cemetery where each grave is located.

The Calderdale area – recently seen as the setting for the critically-acclaimed BBC drama series Happy Valley - has strong links with the industrial revolution and, in particular, the cotton and textiles industry with numerous mills throughout the region. Emma Jolly's latest blog explores this in some detail and looks at the tough conditions endured by many textile workers in the mid 19th century.

Other West Yorkshire records available on Deceased Online include The National Archives collection for many sites across West Yorkshire and Wakefield Metropolitan Council.

East Staffordshire records feature Burton on Trent's historic Stapenhill Cemetery

Records for the two cemeteries managed by East Staffordshire Borough Council in the English West Midlands are now available on www.deceasedonline.com.

The major site is the historic Stapenhill Cemetery in Burton on Trent, which opened almost exactly 150 years ago and features many records reflecting 19th Century industries and, in particular, numerous names associated with Burton's beer and brewing heritage. During much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Burton was regarded as Britain's 'beer capital' and at its peak there were dozens of breweries, the most famous of which are still well known brands today: Bass, Marston's and Worthington, to name a few.

Sandwell, heart of the Black Country, adds records to Deceased Online

Records for all cemeteries and crematoria managed by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council are being added to www.deceasedonline.com. Sandwell is a large council area in the famous Black Country in England's West Midlands (adjacent to the City of Birmingham)

Although Sandwell is a relatively new council area, it has a great heritage from the Industrial Revolution and includes such well known towns as Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich. See full details here.

The new collection dates back to 1858 and will comprise over 1 million records for over 300,000 burials and 130,000 cremations; immediately available are records for four key sites at Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and Oldbury.

The records comprise:

- digital scans (or computerised versions) of original burial registers
- details of all grave occupants in each cemetery
- maps indicating, where possible, the section where the grave is located in Tipton cemetery

Bunhill Fields burials available on Deceased Online

The National Archives' Bunhill registers now available on Deceased Online

Records for one of London's most historic and fascinating burial grounds are now available on Deceased Online

Bunhill Fields, located a stone's throw from The Barbican Centre just north of the City of London, is an old burial ground and the records available, 1704 to 1854, are all registers from The National Archives RG4 collection.

The records include many great luminaries, writers and reformers from Georgian, Regency and early Victorian London including Daniel Defoe and William Blake. See full details

Records for 20 burial grounds have just been added to the database joining those for Peterhead's historic St Peter's Churchyard and main cemetery.

The National Archives (TNA), burial ground removals

Following last week's launch of burial ground removals dating back to the 16th century, many users have asked about more details of the TNA records.

All information on the nearly 200 burial grounds are listed by English or Welsh region and then in alphabetical order by county in the database coverage section.

Among the 105,000 records available currently (more will be added next week), those with the highest number of burials include:

Cathay's Cemetery, Cardiff (1828-1992)
Old Cemetery, Gloucester (1800-1973)
Holy Trinity Churchyard, Liverpool (1790-1887)
Bath Street Burial Ground,Walsall (1756-1941)
West Hill Cemetery, Winchester (1826-1970)

Deceased Online adds military burial records

Deceased Online adds military burial records from The National Archives (TNA)
Second set of records from TNA added to www.deceasedonline.com

Deceased Online, the UK national database website dedicated to burial and cremation records, has added thousands of military burial records sourced from The National Archives, Kew.

The records, which date back to 1756, comprise digital scans of burial registers for eight cemeteries:

• Aldershot Military Burial Ground, Aldershot, Surrey: 1856-1911
• Canterbury Garrison, Kent: 1808-1958
• Greenwich Royal Hospital and Chapel, Greenwich, London: 1844-1966
• Haslar and Clayhall Royal Navy cemeteries, Gosport, Hampshire: 1826-1911
• Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Gosport, Hampshire: 1864-1975
• Royal Garrison Church of St George, Woolwich, Greenwich, London: 1937-1964
• Sandhurst Royal Military College Chapel, Sandhurst, Camberley, Surrey: 1829-1978
• Sheerness Dockyard Church, Isle of Sheppey, Kent: 1756-1826

Deceased Online digitally scanned the registers at TNA’s Kew premises, created an index and linked the scans into the database. The records are therefore searchable by name, area and location through the normal search tools on the Deceased Online website.

This week’s Deceased Online blog, British Cemetery and Cremation Records written by genealogist and historian Emma Jolly, is dedicated to the new records, see: http://deceasedonlineblog.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/tna-military-burial-records.html. Emma explains that these records are outside normal war graves and feature families and others as well as military personnel who usually did not perish in military action but whose burial records are notoriously difficult to find:

Emma explains: “The death records of ancestors who died whilst serving in the armed forces can be difficult to find. Where service records and musters don't survive, family historians are often unsure of where in the world their military relatives were buried. The families of those who travelled with their military husband or father can also be hard to trace. Families did not always travel with the regiment, but even if they did they are often not named in muster or pay rolls.”

This is the second dataset of TNA records that Deceased Online has digitized and added to its website; it follows all records for the historic Brompton Cemetery, one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ Victorian cemeteries. Further TNA records are currently in process.

The Deceased Online website is used extensively by amateurs and professionals worldwide, researching family history, and those simply trying to locate lost relatives or ancestors. As well as records from major national bodies and archives, the website contains exclusive records from over 120* local government authorities through the UK. (*Currently online or in process.)

Cemetery section maps for seven W Yorkshire cemeteries now available

Following the addition of burial records for 20 cemeteries in West Yorkshire to www.deceasedonline.com, cemetery sections maps have been added to 7 locations. The 7 cemeteries are: Alverthorpe, Horbury, Normanton Upper, Normanton Lower, Outwood, Stanley and Wakefield. Maps for more cemeteries will be added soon. With three diagrams for each record, the maps indicate the section of each cemetery in which specific graves are located.

We're currently uploading tens of thousands of military burial records digitized by us at The National Archives. These non-war grave records date back to the early 19th Century and feature: Greenwich Royal Hospital, Sandhurst, Aldershot, Haslar RN, Royal Victoria, Sheerness Dockyard and other cemeteries and burial grounds

Records are accessible on name and area/county searches but we will be adding more details and descriptions to the website soon

Wakefield burial and crematoria records online

Deceased Online has added nearly 230,000 burial and cremation records for the West Yorkshire area of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council

The Wakefield area is large and covers such notable towns as Castleford, Featherstone, Knottingley and Pontefract as well as Wakefield City

The earliest records are from 1857 and feature 19 cemeteries and two crematoria

Currently, the data comprises scans of registers for approximately 75% of records; more data will be added soon including cemetery section maps and grave details

One of the UK's top 10 historic landmarks*, Peterborough Cathedral (pictured), has had all identifiable burial records digitized and uploaded to www.deceasedonline.com
* according to a 2007 survey

All available records from the mid 16th century are included, together with some earlier records which date back to the early 12th Century.

We believe that this is the first time that any Cathedral has digitized its burial records and made them available online**

** Brechin Cathedral (records also available on Deceased Online) is, strictly speaking, no longer a cathedral

The Peterborough Cathedral records feature many notable burials; including Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, executed in 1587 in Fotheringhay Castle, and Catherine of Aragon, Queen of England and first wife of Henry VIII

The records comprise scans of register entries (until 1995) and some photos of memorials and graves
Brompton Cemetery records start next week

Next week we start uploading records for the historic Brompton Cemetery in West London. This is the first time that one of the 'Magnificent Seven' Victorian Garden cemeteries has had all records digitized and made available through any website.

More Trafford burials join Deceased Online

Nearly 120,000 burial records for Manchester's Trafford area now available

Records for all five of the cemeteries managed by Trafford Council in Greater Manchester are now available on www.deceasedonline.com

Dunham Lawn, Sale (aka Sale Brooklands) and Urmston cemeteries join Hale and Stretford Cemeteries with their data on the Deceased Online website; there are now nearly 120,000 burial records available for the area

The records comprise scans of burial registers, grave details and cemetery maps indicating section locations of graves. Click here for more information.

Records for Altrincham Crematorium in Trafford will be available on Deceased Online very shortly.

Trafford is the 2nd council area within Greater Manchester with records on Deceased Online. All records for Bolton Council - comprising 7 cemeteries and a crematorium - can be accessed immediately.

Trafford burial and cremation records online

Trafford is 2nd council in Greater Manchester to add records to Deceased Online

Burial and cremation records for Trafford Council in the south of Greater Manchester are being added to the specialist database website, www.deceasedonline.com

All records for two of the Council's five cemeteries are immediately available. Hale (aka Altrincham) Cemetery opened in December 1894 and Stretford Cemetery opened in February 1885

The records comprise scans of burial registers, grave details and cemetery maps indicating section locations of graves. Click here for more information.

Records for the remaining three cemeteries and Altrincham Crematorium in Trafford will be available on Deceased Online over the next few weeks
