Further delay to World Archives Project return

We have been working to update all parts of the World Archives Project and the time came yesterday for a blog facelift. Coming up next is the online dashboard – because it is more involved we are still anticipating it will be a few more months until we are back online.

Alongside these changes we continue to work on improving the keying tool and backend support. We appreciate your support and patience as we continue to make changes and improve your indexing experience.

World Archives Project will return late October/early November

I've just noticed that Ancestry's World Archives Project is offline. Here's the message on its page:

World Archives Project

We'll be back soon.

The Ancestry World Archives Project (AWAP) in collaboration with the publisher of Family Tree Maker are working on upgrades to the AWAP program including development of an improved Keying Tool. This site will be offline until the improvements are completed. The AWAP service will be inaccessible and you will not be able to use the Keying Tool application. All your data and results of keying are safe and will be available again once the service is turned back on.

We expect to be up and running with Keying Tool 2.0 in late October or early November. Please check the blog for updates.

This follows a recent beta test for its new platform in March - see https://britishgenes.blogspot.com/2019/03/ancestrys-new-wap-keying-tool-now-online.html.

Ancestry's new WAP keying tool now online

Ancestry (www.ancestry.com) has announced the open beta testing roll out of its new World Archives Project tool for transcribing datasets, the first of which is an American collection, on Alabama Surname Files.

From Ancestry's announcement, it states its most notable updates are:

• New sign in screen and updated look of the tool.
• Feedback on each image set as it is reviewed. When you are in the main screen of the tool you can toggle between Newsfeed and Survey to see feedback from the reviewer.

Three new projects for the World Archives Project

Latest additions to Ancestry's World Archives Project (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/community/wap/dashboard.aspx#active):

The Australia, Newspaper Vital Notices, 1841-2001 will be familiar as we have keyed similar newspaper projects in the past. There will be some image sets without records to index – we opted for fewer images/image set so the indexing didn’t become overwhelming. Questions can be asked on the message board or sent to worldarchivessupport@ancestry.com.

On to the Ukraine with the USHMM – Ukraine, Applications for ID for the Citizens of Stanislav, 1939-1945 records. These records are in Ukranian and can be difficult to read – for this reason this project is advanced. Questions can be asked on the message board or sent to worldarchivessupport@ancestry.com.

And finally we land in the UK with the West Midlands, England, Criminal Registers. Criminal records are always fun and these are even moreso as many have images. There are quite a few different record formats so reviewing the sample images will be helpful. Questions can be asked on the message board or sent to worldarchivessupport@ancestry.com.

Belfast Newsletter indexing and other Ancestry WAP projects

I've just had a quick look at Ancestry's volunteer based World Archive Project (for indexing) page to see what is up and coming, and note that the Belfast Newsletter, which has been on the site for some time in a browse only format, is currently close to having vital records intimations notices from 1738-1925 indexed. Unfortunately, however, the project is only unlocking part of the paper's potential, as the instruction "Do not key any vital information from regular news articles" sadly reveals. Nevertheless, this will be a useful resource when uploaded for public access.

World Archives Project - 5 years on

Today sees the fifth anniversary of the World Archives Project from Ancestry (http://community.ancestry.co.uk/wap/dashboard.aspx), the initiative that allows crowdsourcing as a means to index Ancestry's rapidly growing collection of digitised material (and at a much higher standard than was previously the case).
