The Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain has announced that My Heritage (www.myheritage.com) is to act as 'Gold Sponsor' of its first family history fair at the De Vere Village Urban Resort in Elstree’s Centennial Park on 7th July 2013 between 10am and 6pm.
Laurence Harris, Head of Genealogy (UK) for MyHeritage, specialist Jewish genealogical researcher and a former Chairman of JGSGB, will be one of the speakers at the Fair, giving a presentation on “Family Trees, SmartMatching, SuperSearch and Record Matching”.

British Jewry Book of Honour online

The British Jewry Book of Honour is now available for military ancestry searches online at Forces War Records
50,000 Jews served in the British and colonial forces during World War I. Forces War Records is the only genealogy website to make these military service records available online for ancestry searches and tracing family history.
Forces War Records has recently transcribed The British Jewry Book of Honour and published its full contents on the website, making thousands of Jewish military service records available for online ancestry searches.
The British Jewry Book of Honour was published in honour of the 50,000 Jews who contributed to British and colonial forces' involvement in World War I. It includes an alphabetical list of Jewish soldiers awarded military honours, and those killed in action. Published in London in 1922, the book is a permanent record of Jewish enlistment, casualties, military honours, Jewish Units, Jewish hospitals and other Jewish institutions and agencies. It also contains the nominal rolls of Jews who served, listed by service and by regiment; indexed photographs of many of these individuals, as well as letters of support and acknowledgement from distinguished men of the day, both Jewish and non-Jewish. The book was originally edited by Reverend Michael Adler who was the first Jewish chaplain to serve in HM Forces.
Forces War Records is the definitive online guide to military ancestry searches and sister site to Forces Reunited, the leading British military community on the web with more than one million members and reuniting veterans since 2001. The British Jewry Book of Honour is exclusive to the Forces War Records Collections List.

JGSGB Family History Fair in Elstree

The JGSGB (Jewish Genealogy Society of Great Britain) is organising a Family History Fair, to be hosted at the De Vere Village Urban Resort hotel in Elstree on 7th July 2013. The main room, the hotel’s Inspiration Suite, will provide space for exhibitors and vendors of all things genealogical to aid the researching, recording, storage and sharing of your family’s history. Two additional rooms will be dedicated to expert speakers on Jewish genealogy and history; and there will be ‘Ask the Expert’ sessions where visitors can exchange their problems for solutions. A highlight will be the JGSGB’s Translation Desk where visitors can bring Hebrew, Arabic, Ladino and Cyrillic documents – not forgetting headstone inscriptions – for immediate translation.
You don’t have to be Jewish to come to the Fait or, indeed, take advantage of the JGSGB. Both are aimed not only at keen and committed Jewish genealogists but those who know that they have Jewish ancestry or merely think they might but have not yet discovered how to uncover their forebears.

JewishGen’s Family Finder talk

Jeanette Rosenberg on JewishGen’s Family Finder
Jeanette Rosenberg of the JGSGB (Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain) will address members of the Society’s Midlands Regional Group on Sunday 31st March 2013 from 3pm to 5pm. The venue is Birmingham’s Progressive Synagogue at 1 Roseland Way, B15 1HD where, illustrated by her own research samples, Jeanette will describe some of the key benefits of JewishGen’s Family Finder (JGFF) online database of ancestral Jewish settlement and surnames. Using the JGFF puts researchers in touch with others seeking ancestors of the same surname or town of origin. Its content being international, JGFF is of particular relevance to a genealogical community whose ancestors dispersed around the world more than most. For further information, or to book your place, email David Harrison at midlands @ jgsgb.org.uk or phone 0121 427 2047.
There will be an open discussion after Jeanette’s talk, when all who attend can share their research problems in a friendly manner, trading help and advice from each other and the local experts. Please bring your research notes, notepaper and pencils. Free to JGSGB members, the meeting is open to all those interested in the Jewish genealogy. Non-members pay a modest £3.00. Light refreshments will be available for a small charge.
Birmingham Progressive Synagogue has lifts to all floors and disabled access to the front door. There are disabled and other toilets on all floors except the Sanctuary and all kitchens are only used for milk foods. There is adjacent parking on the street within the Parking Meter Bays which are free on Sundays; there is also covered parking nearby at £2.20 for three hours. The nearest railway station is Birmingham, Five Ways and dozens of bus routes run along Broad Street and Islington Row.
NB: Registration for JGFF is necessary, but it’s free. JGFF is at www.jewishgen.org

Jewish ancestry talk in Birmingham

In Search of Jewish Ancestry
A talk by Anthony Joseph, President, JGSGB
Anthony Joseph, President of the JGSGB (Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain) will address members of the Society’s Midlands Regional Group on Sunday 9th September from 3.00pm. The venue is the Council Chamber of Birmingham’s Progressive Synagogue at 1 Roseland Way, B15 1HD, where Anthony will give an account of his personal odyssey over 65 years in pursuit of his own particular genealogy.
Anthony became seriously interested in his roots at the age of ten – at least 40 years earlier than most people – and has noted the changes in research techniques since then, particularly with the advent of the Internet (Internet sources will also form part of the tutorial following Anthony’s talk, ending around 5.00pm, so bring your questions). He discovered fairly early in his research that his Anglo-Jewish roots extended back some three hundred years, almost to the Resettlement in the UK (usually taken as 1656) providing a wealth of material to investigate. His journey started in London, taking in ancestral forays into Lincoln and the West of England (Devon and Cornwall) before ending in Birmingham; with many diversions world-wide (especially the Antipodes and Israel) along the way.
All-comers are welcomed, with members of JGSGB admitted free. Non-members pay a modest charge of £3.00. For further information, or to book your place, email David Harrison at djh_119@hotmail.com. The venue has disabled access.

JGSGB's Shemot publication wins award
Congratulations to the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain (www.jgsgb.org.uk):
Shemot wins IAJGS Outstanding Publication Award 2012
Shemot, the journal of the JGSGB (Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain), has won the coveted IAJGS annual award for Outstanding Publication by a Member Organization of IAJGS for the second time. The award was presented at the IAJGS Paris Conference Gala Dinner on Tuesday 17th July and accepted on behalf of JGSGB by Bernard Valman, the Editor of Shemot, who regards it as a tribute to the whole organisation which has supported it, but especially to the authors, proof readers and readers.
The citation for the award reads: “Shemot, the outstanding journal of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain is published with a distinct theme three times each year. Each issue attracts contributors with expertise in the theme and provides articles with breadth and depth. The content of this relevant, informative and worthwhile journal reflects the skill set of a strong network of member and non-member contributors. Although the high-quality and original articles are primarily of interest to individuals researching British roots and those whose families trans-migrated through Great Britain, they are relevant to all researchers."
Shemot, which means “Names” in Hebrew, owes its pre-eminence to its long-serving editorial team of Bernard Valman and Mike Gordon, not to mention its many interesting, informative and authoritative articles. Some recent themed issues have included Jewish genealogy in South Africa, the East End of London, and Leeds. Shemot was founded in 1992 and is circulated to all JGSGB members, as well as dozens of other Jewish genealogy societies and libraries including the New York Public Library.

A talk by Laurence Harris
A talk on a period of mass immigration to the UK by Jews fleeing the pogroms and poverty of Eastern Europe between 1870 and 1930 is being given by Laurence Harris to the JGSB (Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain) at the JGSGB Library, 33 Seymour Place London W1H 5AP from 2.30 to 3.50pm on Thursday 19th July 2012.
Some immigrants stayed in the UK and established new congregations; others – the transmigrants – moved on to the USA, Canada, South America, South Africa and Australia. In UK Records 1870-1930; Residents and Transmigrants, Laurence will identify available sources of civil, religious, and Jewish community records, during this period, covering births, marriages and deaths, synagogue, British naturalisation and military records, plus newspapers, charities, schools, trade directories, wills, censuses, passenger lists and alien registration.
All-comers are welcomed, with members of JGSGB and JHS admitted free. Non-members pay a modest charge of £5.00. For further information, email newsletter@jgsgb.org.uk
