FindmyPast (www.findmypast.co.uk) has added two collections which may be of interest if your ancestors migrated to the United States:

United States Naturalization Petitions contains more than 7.8 million records spanning the years 1905 to 1950. The collection currently covers four states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania, and allows you to discover when and where your immigrant ancestor was born, how old they were when they first crossed the Atlantic and their port of entry. Images of the original documents may even include a photograph of your ancestor.


US Passport Applications and Indexes

Discover when, where, and why your ancestors travelled with over 800,000 US Passport Application records. Applications may also include a physical description, your ancestor's occupation, residence, naturalisation details, the name of their spouse, date of birth and place of birth. Most applications are one to two pages in length and, from 21 December 1914 onward, photographs of applicants are also included. Photographs can be found on the second page when viewing images of the original document.

This collection of regular passport applications has been compiled from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) collection M1490. Images of the original documents are included and may reveal additional details of your ancestor's citizenship, such as when and from where they immigrated, by what means they arrived in the United States, and when they were naturalized. For those born in the United States, you may learn details of their fathers' naturalization such as their full name, birthplace, and date and place of emigration. Additional details were also recorded such as the applicant's eye colour as well as descriptions of their mouth, nose, forehead, chin, complexion, face, and hair colour.

Salford Portmote
The earliest surviving records of the portmote of the borough of the township and manor of Salford in Lancashire were transcribed and edited by J. G. de T. Mandley and published by the Chetham Society in 1902. The court was held after Easter and Michaelmas each year. The record usually starts with a list of jurors, sometimes with a general suit roll. Officers are appointed in the autumn court - borough reeve, constables, miselayers, burleymen, alefounders, scavengers, and overseers for the pump. Where a freeholder had died since the previous court, an inquiry was made as to his or her heir. There are presentments of minor offences, particularly affrays and selling ale contrary to statute. 19 October 1602

The Letters of Marque or Commissions to take Pirates authorized the owners of ships enumerated in the second column, to set forth the ships named in the third column, for the purposes contemplated by their Letters of Marque or Commission. 24 June 1625 to 30 December 1625

East Riding Game Certificates
A list of Game Duty certificates issued in the East Riding of Yorkshire, September 1800. Full names are given, surname first, and address.

London Telegraph Clerks
This list of persons irregularly admitted to the service of the Post Office from the date of the transfer of the telegraphs, 29 January 1870, to 30 September 1874, extends to 3653 names. The return gives full name (surname first, married women indicated by Mrs.); age when admitted; service to which admitted; and last previous employment.

Orphans admitted to the Port of Hull Sailors' Orphan Home in January 1877. Full names, and port.

Zulu War Medal Roll: 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot
List of Officers, Non Commissioned Officers, and men, entitled to the medal for military operations in South Africa, during 1877-8-9, and the names of those soldiers who would have been entitled except for Desertion, or Misconduct. This regiment's actions were almost exclusively against the Zulus in 1879. WO 100/47

1937
Naturalized Aliens
The Home Office issued a monthly list of aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization (or of Readmission to British Nationality) had been granted by the Secretary of State, and whose oaths of allegiance had been registered. The lists are arranged alphabetically by surname and forename; then give country of origin, occupation, address, and date of taking oath of allegiance. This is the list issued in September 1937 of those naturalized in August 1937. An asterisk indicates re-admission.

Canadian naturalisation database extended

The Canadian national archive, Library and Archives Canada (www.bac-lac.gc.ca), has updated its naturalisations database. From the archive's blog:

Library and Archives Canada is pleased to announce the release of a new version of the online database Naturalization Records, 1915-1951. The nominal index has been extended with the addition of more than 68,000 names and now covers the years from 1915 to 1944, inclusively. Work is ongoing to extend the nominal index to 1951, and volunteers are welcome to help. Those interested should write to Cdn-Nat-Coord@jgs-montreal.org.

TNA adds digitised naturalisation and denization papers

The National Archives at Kew has added a new collection, Home Office: Denization and Naturalisation Papers and Correspondence, as sourced from its HO1 series, and covering the period from 1801-1871. The collection includes details on some 7000 applicants who applied for naturalisation after the 1844 Naturalisation Act, but also many other papers of those applying for denization, an alternative process.
