Did your ancestors die in Scotland? Explore this index of more than 164,000 records from the commissariat courts of Scotland between 1481 and 1807. Each record includes a transcript of the original will and testament that will reveal the date of the will and where it was made.

Scotland Monumental Inscriptions
Over 112,000 new records covering all of Scotland are now available to search. The registers will reveal your ancestors place of abode, qualification, and address. This collection has been obtained from FamilySearch.

Scottish Monumental Inscriptions website revamped

The Scottish Monumental Inscriptions website has been revamped at https://www.scottish-monumental-inscriptions.com.

The site provides images and transcriptions of monumental inscriptions from graveyards across Scotland. As well as new CDs being added over the next week, there are also additional links and general information now available on the site. Amongst the new additions is a page listing family history researchers who might be able to help.

Please note that as part of the change, if you were registered on the old site, you will need to re-register for the new version.

Dunfermline has been a total nightmare to do as we have had to go back at least 7 or 8 times, due to light issues, bad photographs, the list goes on, but glad to say were catching up here now with only about 12 sections to complete. This will be with you as soon as we can get it ready.

New look Scottish Monumental Inscriptions site

I've just heard from Helen Grant that her newly designed site for Scottish Monumental Inscriptions is now up and running at www.scottish-monumental-inscriptions.com.

Included in the changes is a new facility that allows you to download the monumental inscriptions data in PDF format, without photos, rather than having to buy the CD. So, if we take Aberdalgie Churchyard in Perthshire as an example, the CD costs £5 and includes both pics and transcripts, but the PDF download option, with transcripts only, costs just £2. A useful option!

Dundee and Angus headstone inscriptions on Deceased Online

News of some more records from Scottish Monumental Inscriptions appearing on the Deceased Online platform at www.deceasedonline.com.

50,000+ names now included for Dundee and Angus headstone collections

30 more burial grounds, cemeteries and churchyards have been added to the Deceased Online headstone collection from Scottish Monumental Inscriptions (SMI)

Records available comprise photos of headstones together with the carefully transcribed digitised inscriptions for easy reading

The new records are for the Angus Council and Dundee City Council areas in North East Scotland with records dating back to 1754

In total, there are now SMI headstone collections from over 230 cemeteries, burial grounds and churchyards across Scotland

The SMI records are included in the main search indexes on the website so that names and dates can be searched for in the usual way

This set of records comprises headstone and memorial photographs and transcriptions from 99 cemeteries and burial grounds from Argyll to the Scottish Borders including Banffshire (Moray), Clackmannanshire, Edinburgh, Fife, The Lothians, Lanarkshire and North Ayrshire.

The oldest records date back to 1526.

Memorial inscriptions can be searched on surname, forenames and date in the same way as register records; but access can also be purchased to a whole cemetery/churchyard collection for browsing, or just the subset of headstone images with inscriptions containing a specific surname. These inscriptions can then be searched for any combination of names, words and dates (i.e. farmer, drowned, killed).

The records have been supplied by Scottish Memorial Inscriptions (SMI) who have photographed and transcribed the inscriptions from the memorials and headstones. New indexes have been prepared by Deceased Online to assist with searching.

There are now records for over 250 Scottish cemeteries, burial grounds and crematoria on Deceased Online and we will upload records for 150 more in the next few months.
