A day at The Family History Show, London

The Family History Show, London has now released a video of interviews with some of the many happy exhibitors. Comments from the stall holders included just how busy they had been throughout the day and what a friendly environment the venue had been. Other exhibitors mentioned what an excellent fair it had been with a good turn out and many interesting stalls that had engaged and impressed those visiting the event.

The large crowds of show visitors testified to the public’s willingness to support this event, now double the size from last years show. Perhaps made more popular by its low cost entry, free car parking and free mini-bus to and from the rail station. The various free talks held in the two good sized lecture theatres were well attended throughout the day as was the new free ‘Ask the Experts’ zone.

Family History Show episode 10 online

The tenth episode of the Family History Show is now online at www.familyhistoryshow.net/the-vodcasts/episode-10. This month's episode sees Nick Barratt and Laura Berry, ably assisted by Melanie Backe-Hansen and Alex Goddard, curator of the Geffrye Museum in Shoreditch, East London, explaining some basics on how to research house history.

It's worth noting that although many records such as trade directories, electoral rolls and censuses all do the same thing for house research across Britain, the legal system concerning property transactions and inheritance was completely different in Scotland to that in England and Wales. As such there are many, many different types of records used in Scotland, including sasines, retours, skat, feu duty and rent books, annual valuation rolls, cess rolls and more that can help with Scottish research. Family History Show episode 9

The latest edition of the Family History Show has just gone online, this month taking a look at the work of the College of Arms in London, the heraldic authority for England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and most of the Commonwealth countries with Queen as sovereign (excepting Canada and Scotland). Incidentally, the College of Arms has no role in Scotland, where the Court of the Lord Lyon, under the guiding hand of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, is the legal authority. For more on its role visit www.lyon-court.com. A major difference here in Scotland is that the law of arms is treated as part of civil law - hence the 'Court' of the Lord Lyon. Use someone's arms in Scotland that aren't yours and it will soon have you hauled up on a charge...! Family History Show - episode 7

The seventh episode of Nick Barratt's and Laura Berry's monthly Family History Show is now online at www.familyhistoryshow.net/the-vodcasts/episode-7.

In this latest episode the round up of interviews and features from this year's Who Do You Think You Are? Live show continues, including interviews with American blogger Dick Eastman, The Genealogist's Internet author Peter Christian - and some wee Scottish based eejit from Ireland by the name of Paton who shamelessly plugs his British blog and then discusses Irish genealogy! There are also pieces on the Freemen of the City of London, Nick discusses ancestral tourism, and more.

Family History Show at the SoG

Your Family History magazine's editors Nick Barratt and Laura Berry have recently been on a visit to the Society of Genealogists in London to interview Else Churchill and to get a look around behind the scenes for the latest instalment of their Family History Show. Laura's chat with Else looks at what a typical visitor might have to do online before a visit and what he or she might then be likely to find once at the facility, whilst Nick looks for treasures in the basement. Must admit, the letter mentioned on Sir Walter Raleigh didn't do much for me - but as for THAT BOOK....!!!!
