Brightsolid announces DC Thomson Family History
Following the company's recent split, Brightsolid's family history wing, which is responsible for FindmyPast, ScotlandsPeople, Genes Reunited and the British Newspaper Archive, now has a new name - DC Thomson Family History.

Brightsolid splits into two companies
Big news from Dundee!
Brightsolid, parent company of FindmyPast and Genes Reunited, and partners in ScotlandsPeople (with the National Records of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon), the British Newspaper Archive (with the British Library), and Lives of the First World War (with the Imperial War Museum), is being split into two businesses - Brightsolid Online Publishing, dealing with its genealogical interests, and Brightsolid Online Technologies, dealing with its various IT interests.
As part of the changes, current heid yin Chris van der Kuyl is stepping into a new role of Strategic Advisor to the DC Thompson board (DC Thompson is the main Dundee based media group behind Brightsolid), and in his stead comes a new CEO for Brightsolid Online Publishing - and therefore a new boss for FMP and Genes Reunited - in the form of Annelies van den Belt. She was previously with SUP Media, the leading digital publisher in Russia, with previous roles also at ITV, Telegraph Media Group and News International. Heading up Brightsolid Online Technologies as CEO is Richard Higgs.
Ms van den Belt said: “The opportunity at brightsolid to build a truly global digital family history business is an exciting one. brightsolid has the potential through its current assets and footprint in the English speaking markets to become a leading global player. Furthermore, being part of the DC Thomson Group is an exciting professional proposition and I look forward to working with the Board and to sharing my digital knowledge and experience going forward in developing and creating further digital products.”

Probate material added to Genes Reunited
News of data joining Genes Reunited (www.genesreunited.com) - some of this looks like stuff not already available on FindmyPast (UPDATE: I have been informed all of this is already in fact on FMP, though some do not appear to be listed on the general search page on that site):
NEW WILLS AND PROBATE RECORDS ADDED TO GENES REUNITED
Today leading family history website Genes Reunited published new records including the Bank of England Wills Extracts from 1717-1845 and the London Probate Index from 1750-1858.
The Bank of England Wills Extracts is a fantastic resource for family historians containing over 60,000 entries giving an insight into the period 1717 – 1845. This latest record set contains extracts from the wills of those who held money in public funds as well as orders made for stockholders who went bankrupt.
From today people interested in uncovering more about the lives of their ancestors can visit www.genesreunited.co.uk and search the latest records listed below:
- Bank of England Wills Extracts 1717-1845
- London Probate Index 1750-1858
- Divorce Index 1858-1873
- Great Western Railway Shareholders 1832-1932
- Suffolk Testator Index 1847-1857
The Great Western Railway Shareholders Index details the records of the shareholders in the railway and holds approximately 440,000 individuals, with a total number of 570,464 records. A record entry includes executors, beneficiaries and others who were involved in transferring shareholdings.
Now that the records are available online, Genes Reunited has discovered Isambard Kingdom Brunel who was the engineer on the Great Western Railway project. As a shareholder Isambard appears in the Index following his death in 1859.
The newly added records are available online at www.genesreunited.co.uk and can be viewed by Platinum members or on a pay per view basis.
Rhoda Breakell, Head of Genes Reunited comments: “The Wills and Probate records, some of which date from 1717 up to 1932, are important resources for family historians, but also for those looking for relatives who have lived more recently. The easily-searchable database allows members to uncover important details about their own history at the click of a button. Genes Reunited releases military records
From Genes Reunited (www.genesreunited.com) - note my comments below on the Kilmainham Pension records:
NEW MILITARY RECORDS RELEASED ON GENES REUNITED
To coincide with Remembrance Day, UK family history site, Genes Reunited has released a variety of military records taking its collection to 8.5 million.
The British Army Service Records are just one of the latest records added to the site and they include the Chelsea Pensioners British Army Service records from 1760-1913. These records are an important resource for family historians as they provide rich information on the soldier’s name, place of birth, regiment and the dates of service within the British Army.
Another fantastic record for family historians are the recently added Prison Hulk Registers from 1811-1843. These records detail the conditions on the prison ships and give an insight into the characters of the prisoners onboard. We’ve found a 14 year old boy, James Smith, who was described by officials as “An unfortunate depraved boy almost past reformation.” The records also detail the crimes committed and we’ve uncovered a 16 year old convicted for 7 years on the Prison ships for stealing cheese.
New WW1 and WW11 Prisoner of War records have also been added to Genes Reunited. These records hold vital information; the Prisoner of War 1939 – 1945 records detail the prisoner’s name, rank, regiment, camp number, camp type and camp location.

The newly added military records can be viewed on a pay-per-view basis or Platinum members can choose to add on the record set to their package for a low cost. The military records have been added to the existing military additional features package.
COMMENT: The release mentions that the Kilmainham records from WO118 are included, these being pension admission book records for British soldiers discharged to pension in Dublin, which have hitherto not been made available online. I can't find these however in the drop down list on the site. I don't have a subscription, so cannot tell, for example, if they have been lumped in with the Chelsea Pension Records. I did try a search for a Robert Henderson on GR which shows 95 returns, but only 65 on FindmyPast, so it may be possible. I have asked GR to clarify.
UPDATE 2.55pm and 3.35pm: Genes Reunited has confirmed that the records for Kilmainham are NOT yet online - this was included in error, as were all those listed above now in italics - just in case you've spent ages looking for them!

Free access to English and Welsh 1911 census

Today leading family history website Genes Reunited added new and innovative features including a Keepsafe, for digitally storing all of your family records, photos and memories and Relation Profiles, where you can view and edit details about each individual in your tree. This latest addition comes after genesreunited.co.uk recently refreshed its appearance with a new, and easy to navigate redesign.
The Keepsafe is a unique and organised way to collate your family history. It’s a place for members to safely store and share documents, from photos and certificates to maps and letters. It’s available to all members, who’ll have the option to open their images to the public, keep them private or share them with other members, family and friends. They’ll even be able to share their Keepsafe on facebook. At launch today there are over 2.7 million private images already uploaded to Keepsafe.
Relation Profiles are automatically created for each relation Genes Reunited members add to their family trees. It includes a clear timeline, notes section and immediate family tree. There’s a section prompting members what to do next in their research. You can edit the details and these changes will be reflected in the tree. You can view any photos or records that are attached to the person too. Each profile can also be printed, so you can share your discoveries with your family.

Today leading family history website Genes Reunited added new and innovative features including a Keepsafe, for digitally storing all of your family records, photos and memories and Relation Profiles, where you can view and edit details about each individual in your tree. This latest addition comes after genesreunited.co.uk recently refreshed its appearance with a new, and easy to navigate redesign.
The Keepsafe is a unique and organised way to collate your family history. It’s a place for members to safely store and share documents, from photos and certificates to maps and letters. It’s available to all members, who’ll have the option to open their images to the public, keep them private or share them with other members, family and friends. They’ll even be able to share their Keepsafe on facebook. At launch today there are over 2.7 million private images already uploaded to Keepsafe.
Relation Profiles are automatically created for each relation Genes Reunited members add to their family trees. It includes a clear timeline, notes section and immediate family tree. There’s a section prompting members what to do next in their research. You can edit the details and these changes will be reflected in the tree. You can view any photos or records that are attached to the person too. Each profile can also be printed, so you can share your discoveries with your family.

Friends Reunited relaunch
The social media site Friends Reunited (www.friendsreunited.co.uk), sister site to Genes Reunited (www.genesreunited.co.uk), is getting a facelift and something of a more genealogical purpose, being restyled as a memories site 12 years after it was first launched, rather than just as a simple bridge to old friends from school.
The Telegraph has an article on the new site, including an interview with Chris van der Kuyl, Brightsolid's head honcho, which also includes some of his thoughts on Facebook's privacy policy. British Newspaper Archive on GenesReunited
The recently launched British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.com) has now also been made available on its sister site, Genes Reunited (www.genesreunited.com). It appears to be the same content with a different search interface - at present I have no idea if there are any clear advantages to accessing the collection through Genes, but you are duly advised!
