Poverty and Public Health in Belfast

Another site worth bookmarking is Poverty and Public Health in Belfast, available at It's a Queen's University Belfast project funded for three years by AHRC, which examines poverty in Belfast and the surrounding area from 1800-1973. It aims to provide resources online and to list others offline that are worth consulting for studies into urban poverty in the east of Ulster. Check out the Resources page in particular, where you will find several videos on workhouses and other useful aids.

You can also find the project on Twitter at @BelfastSickPoor

My new book, Tracing Your Irish Family History on the Internet, is now available from Pen and Sword. My Scottish land and church records ebooks are available at, whilst my next Pharos Scottish course, Scottish Research Online, starts Sep 4th - see Time to smash a few brick walls...!
