FindmyPast (www.findmypast.co.uk) has released a British Army worldwide index for 1841, a census equivalent for soldiers serving overseas. From its blog at https://blog.findmypast.com/british-army-worldwide-index-1841-1533776158.html:
The British Army, Worldwide Index 1841 contains over 139,000 records. The Index was created from muster rolls and pay lists between April and June 1841. It includes both British Army and Honourable East India Company servicemen and cover locations as diverse as Sydney, Ceylon, Madras, Honduras, Canada and Malta.
Each records consists of a transcript created from a number of sources. Each record will include the serviceman/woman's name, gender, service number, rank, regiment, location and any additional remarks.
The index was created by Kevin Asplin. Asplin consulted numerous sources at The National Archives and used Harts Army List. Each record will provide an archive reference which can be used at The National Archives to access the original document.
Also released are an index to people who have been knighted in Britain, additional parish record transcripts from Warwickshire, and an update to the Periodical Sources Index (PERSI). Full details at https://blog.findmypast.com/fridays/.
