Free South Australian vital records indexes

Major news if you have connections in the state of South Australia (capital city Adelaide). The South Australian Genealogy and Heraldry Society's Genealogy SA website (www.genealogysa.org.au) has now added searchable indexes to its site for the following vital records categories:

  • Newspaper Birth Notices Index from 1960 onwards
  • Newspaper Death Notices Index from 1972 onwards
  • South Australia Cemeteries Index
  • Birth Registration Certificates Index 1842 - 1928
  • Death Registration Certificates Index 1842 - 1972
  • Marriage Registration Certificates Index 1842 - 1916

The records are also indexed on Ancestry.co.uk (via the worldwide subscription), but this is the first time that the indexes have been made available freely online by any state within Australia. The Ancestry collections also only cover 1842-1922, whereas here birth records go to 1928 ad deaths to 1972.

To access the indexes visit www.genealogysa.org.au/resources/online-databases.html

(With thanks to many sources down under, including Gould Genealogy, Unlock the Past, Alona Tester and Rosemary Kopittke)
