Bureau of Military History records - coming imminently

The Military Archives website from Ireland, at www.militaryarchives.ie, is about to release a major collection of records from one of Ireland's most troubled periods.

The Bureau of Military History (193-1921) collection will contain many interviews from 1947, when the bureau was established, from members of all parties involved in the troubles leading up to the break up of the United Kingdom with the partition of the island of Ireland into Northern Ireland and the new dominion state of the Irish Free State (later the Republic of Ireland). Amongst those interviewed are former members of the original Irish Republican Army (IRA), the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), Cumann na mBan, Sinn Féin, the Irish Citizen Army and even the British Army. An index outlining the names of those who contributed is already available at www.militaryarchives.ie/collections/online-collections-finding-aids/bureau-of-military-history-1913-1921, with the original material, including witness statements, photographs and more due to go online in the next week or two.

Dublin based genie John Grenham paid a visit recently to the Military Archives in Cathal Brugha barracks, with his report on the archives there available to read on his blog at www.irishtimes.com/blogs/irishroots/2012/05/13/military-archives/.
