UK 30 year rule to change to 20 years

The Westminster government has announced that as of 2013 the current rule that prevents the release of classified UK historical documents for thirty years will be reduced to twenty years. This means that the annual release of records will now be doubled to two years worth of releases each year for the next ten years, until it reaches the point where they can become annual again for records just twenty years old.

The National Archives based at Kew has a full announcement on the development at http://nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/739.htm

Some files in Scotland are already being released well ahead of schedule, following a decision by Scottish Ministers in June 2009 to reduce restrictions on 'historical' records. For more on the Scottish early release programme see www.nas.gov.uk/about/120104.asp.
